Also interesting that it looks like they are updating the 7700 CPU cooler to a new CPNS8700. Seems like a waste. The old 7700 is a decent cooler for silent systems but far from a top performer. And why no PWM controllers? They must have warehouses full of those Fanmates that they need to get rid of.

Erm ... so, what will cool the RAM ? Is it me or is it just cooling the Core ? I remember my VF-700 for my X1800XL came with five or six RAM sinks, but that VF-1000 looks like a Core-cooler and nothing more.

I am sure it will include that stuff with the final retail package. Zalman is the type of company to leave something unchecked.

What a joke!!! :D

And you have a better implementation that's just as quiet as the Zalman one?

Erm...the fan blows down onto the video card...and the air then moves outward, some of it along the length of the card in the direction of the fins towards the heatpipes.
IMO, they should put a shroud around the fan, to keep the air from spilling out sideways.
And they're gonna have to figure out RAMsinks too, though they may just go right in underneath it.

And that CNPS8700 looks like a beast. The 7700 was ****** huge, I couldn't believe how big/heavy it was when I installed it in a friend's computer. My CNPS9500 works pretty well cooling my OC'ed E6600 at minimum fan speed, but there is a lack of airflow around the socket/NB, which this should fix.

Yep, GPU cooling is problematic... and every setup is different!

In my (ahem) case, I run a Tuniq Tower in a north-south orientation. Its integrated 120mm fan sticks out the bottom about an inch or two, which blows air over my passive NB sink and the RAM sinks on the backside of my video card. My Sytrin VF-1 Plus GPU cooler has a powerful squirrel cage blower that channels air through the GPU heatpipe radiator and outward along the front side of the card for those RAM sinks.

Here's a benchbuild pic that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. I don't have my ATI 9800 Pro/Sytrin VF-1 installed in this shot -- just a passively cooled ATI 9200SE that I use on the bench... but it exemplifies the direction of the air flow...

I know this isn't the best arrangement -=- but such is life. Everything is a compromise with GPU coolers! ;)

Having said that, I don't see how this VF1000 cooler can possibly live up to the hype. By itself, I don't *think* it'll do squat for cooling! Then again, I suppose it all depends on what other measures you put into place, e.g lots of other fans and sinks.

Only time will tell, yes? :D

Agreed!

Manufacturers are getting silly for the sake of pimping their products now.

I thought the Sytrin VF-1 Plus was ridiculously large when I bought it last year, but it trounced everyone else in the reviews, soooo...

Now it looks like Mary Poppins... :D

And isn't removing the stock cooling on GTS'/GTX's something risky ? I've read a good number of user experiences talking about risking to physically damage the GPU's board itself if the goal is to install a completely new cooling solution. Is it true ? I might be looking for a better cooling solution myself, but if it's risky then ... well I won't take the risk.
