Zalman VF-900 review @ FrostyTech

been thinking about getting one, how is the noise compared to the NV5 Silencers? I don't want anything louder, I'm kind of a silent freak.

The VF-900 and 700 are both quieter then the Silencers.

Am I seeing this correctly, but does the VF-900 appear to be of lower profile than the 700 series??

I'm pretty sure it's the same.

Unless you have a magic way to exhaust the warm air that ZALMAN dumps inside the case without a fan, your exhaust fan will need to run at a higher RPM to do that.
That higher RPM, will increase noise.

If your exhaust fan is already running at a high RPM and you have an excellent air circulation in your case, that is a different story. But then, you will not be a silent freak!

Silent freaks run every fan in their setup at the minimum possible RPM in order to minimize unnecessary noise.

Actually the increased air circulation in your case from a vf700/900 is beneficial to overall cooling.

actually thats not true Navid! If you have proper airflow in your case it will not matter al all!

I am not sure where I saw the review but in the article I read it stated there is no advantage temp wise whatsoever to having the hot air exausted by the NV5 verses having proper airflow in your case and using the Zalman vf700 or vf900.

I will look for it and find it.
The magic way most people exhaust the hot air is via proper airflow!
Having proper airflow does not mean having all your fans running at max rpm!
You are using alot of unsubstatiated assumptions.
Have a nice day!

As I said, if you have a good air flow, there should be no problem with cooling at all using the ZALMAN coolers.

Noise on the other hand is a matter of personal preference. What one finds silent, another may find intolerable! Everyone's perception of sound is unique.

There are people who are willing to compromise cooling for quiet. They run their fans at the lowest RPM that still allows their system to be stable. If you introduce more heat into such a system, you will need to increase fan speed. I never said to maximum RPM. But, you have to increase speed. How much? Depends on how much heat. Will that increase noise? May be, depends on the fans (which one is the dominant noise contributor) and the room temperature and your sensitivity to noise etc.

Is it possible to add heat to a system and not have to increase the fan RPMs? Absolutely.
Is it possible to add heat to any system and not have to increase fan RPM? No, not just any system.

The best thing to do is to try out both and see which one works better for you.

wow so the fins actually don't even make contact with the base, it all goes thru the pipes.

is the fan the same size on 700 and 900?

The Silencer doesn?t move enough air to make a significant impact on overall case temps, so that?s really a moot point the majority of the time. The open design of the Zalmans also has the benefit of cooling power circuitry as well as RAM.

SPCR tested both for noise and the Silencer didn't fair very well vs. the VF-700 or 900 in terms of sound, let alone cooling performance.

It's the exact same fan.

Heh! I'll show you how fickle the public is...

I would never buy a Zalman VF-900 because it comes with blue ramsinks!

LoL! I'll bet Mr. Sang-cheol Lee never thought about that... 🙂
