I remember seeing some pictures in a thread around here of an A8N-E with the tall, blue zalman passive heatsink on the chipset. I was just curious which way I should orient it, and also, do I need to keep the stock black rubber shim on when I install the new heatsink, or can I get buy without it?

What's a black rubber shim? I have an Asus K8N4-E Deluxe and haven't seen a rubber anything on my board.

That's an interesting question. But, look where your graphics card goes. On mine, it ends up right on top of it so it doesn't interfere with it. So, in my case I wouldn't put it at an angle. I would just clean off the stock cooler and put it against the Zalman to help you align the pins on it. It should save you time.

I even put a 40mm coolermaster fan on the side of it taken from a coolermaster heatsink with thin wire. It's an odd way to put it on but it's cooler to the touch than it used to be.

Either orientation will work. You can look at the link in my sig for pictures of how I installed mine. I'd actually recommend rotating it 90 degrees clockwise from the way I have it if your video card will allow for that.

I omitted the rubber shim. I found it to be pointless, and I must've been correct since I've had no problems with the system since I built it 4-5 months ago.

Ok, I went ahead and installed it as it is shown in your rig leaving the rubber shim off. I don't have the rest of the components yet but I'm sure it's all good. Thanks.
