I'm going to install a Zalman 7000 on my P4 2.8C. I have some Artic Silver 3 or could use the compound that Zalman supplies. Which one has superior thermal characteristics?

I thought I heard that Zalman's compound is good stuff but maybe I'll just stick with AS3.

The Zalman is a little more that just generic. I think that they make it themselves. Its certainly better than Generic stuff.
For a CPU, go for the AS3. But if you ever use a ZalmanHP cooler, then use the Generic stuff, and AS3 is conductive, and on Radeons especially, it can cause problems.

He already has the AS3.
