hello i recently took out my old AMD retail heatsink and replaced it with a Zalman 7700. However, after i put it on, i noticed in speedfan that my fan RPM is 1875. I thought that to be pretty low, because the AMD one was 3000 rpm. My question is was i sopposed to use the FAN MATE that came with the heatsink to change the fan RPM? And also, i overclocked my 3700+ from 2.21 to 2.31 to test out my heatsink, and my computer seemed stable, with idle temp of around 31 celsius. However, when i had AIM, speedfan, azurues and while watching a movie, my computer experienced a blue screen of death. Any reason why it might do this? any help would be greatly appreciated

That fan speed is fine, it runs slower. All the fan mate does is allow variable lower speeds, not using it just means you run full speed all the time. Your overclock might not be stable. You need to run memtest and prime95/super_pi overnight to verify it is.

I have an Asus P5AD2-E Premium and my 7700 runs at about 1940 RPM plugged straight into the CPU fan connector and my temps are fine (well as "fine" as a P4 can be :-\ ). As long as your CPU isn't overheating, then you should be fine.

i thought it wasn't recommended to run a 120mm fan directly off a motherboard header?

i suspect the heatsink came with a molex adapter, if i were you i'd stick it on a spare power rail lead from your PSU:)

ok thanks guys. So lets say i ran prime 95 and memtest86 and found that my computer wasn't stable at 2.31. What would i have to do to make it stable?

specs:
amd athlon 64 3700+
asus a8n-sli deluxe
1 gig 2x512mb corsair xms ram
radeon x800
ocz powerstream 520 watts

oh and about the power cords. Im not that sure what a molex adapter is, it just came with a those little power connectors, like the ones fans have. I put my cpu clock speed back to the dafult of 2.21, and i still get blue screens of death. So i think that it is because i have the fan connected to my mobo, but i don't know where to connect it to. Any help would be appreciated guys

no, you dont have to connect the fan to the psu, mobo is fine, and it wouldnt cause bsods. to make it more stable, increase the vcore in the bios to 1.45 or so, your cooler would handle it. even 1.55 will be fine.
