Zalman Hdd heatpipe and thermal paste been tried?

I've been reading about the zalman harddrive cooler. Most reviews mention a very poor interface between the heatpipes and metal blocks. They also speculate on taking the thing apart and applying thermal paste to it; however, none of them actually try. I was wondering if anyone around here has tried, and what were the results if they did?

My zalman heatpipe VGA cooler requires you to put thermal paste between the aluminum and the heatpipe, and it works really well.

I would assume if you put thermal paste on it that it'd improve the performance quite a bit.
