Just wondering if the the heatsink gets in the way of the RAM or if it extends past the board.

I use it on the MSI Neo4 Ultra. Blocks first RAM port (although you CAN get the RAM out if you really try). Shouldn't be a problem...

Thermaltake Big Typhoon is a better heatsink i'd recommend if you haven't bought the Zalman already :)
It will have no RAM clearance issues with any motherboard.

I don't believe it's much heavier than the 7700, if it is at all.

It's certainly not overkill.

Overkill is spending $5000 on some uber crazy cooling setup.

Using the same combo. Not really a problem with it so far. Havent really fiddled inside since I built it either but for me it seems to be sufficient space to install/remove new ram dimms, albeit it might be a bit tricky.
