Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu OR Thermalright XP-120

In your opinions, which do you think is better for the money? The Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu is pure copper and can be bought for $41.99 and it has gotten great reviews. However the Thermalright XP-120 has great reviews also but it's Aluminum and Copper and it's priced at $54.99 on NewEgg. Also you have to buy a 120mm fan to go with it, which is another $13-15.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Joe

I would choose the all copper LED zalman. I'm not sure which model number that is. Its quiet and very effective. The XP-120 is also a very excellent cooler. Its price however combined with the price of a fan aswell isn't worth it to me though.

I would go with the 7700Cu if you have room. The 7000Cu is also a very good cooler but it may run 2 to 3C hotter. I doubt if this will be a problem unless you're pumping over 1.6Vcore to the AMD 64 CPU.

This is what I am ordering tomorrow through NewEgg:

A64 3200+ Venice core
Asus A8N-SLI 939 nForce4 SLI mobo
Corsair XMS 1GB (2x512mb) CAS 2
Leadtek Geforce 6600GT 128mb PCI-Ex x16
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 120GB SATA150 HD
NEC Black IDE DVD Burner
Antec SmartPower 2.0 ATX12V 500W PSU

I'm still deciding on a case. I am thinking of going either with a Thermaltake Tsunami or with a Coolermaster case. Not sure yet. Still getting some more advice and opinions.

And of course I'm debating on the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu, 7700-Cu OR the Thermalright XP-120 or XP-90. I'm running out of budget money though and the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu fits my budget. How much more room would I need for the Zalman 7700-Cu??

Thanks again.
Joe

I agree with the others, I'm a big fan of the Zalman 7700Cu. It's a great cooler. The XP-120 is also a fantastic unit, but for the money and your specs, just stick with the 7700Cu.

Is there a significant difference between the 7000B-Cu and the 7700-Cu? I know that the heatsink is slightly larger on the 7700-Cu. Might be worth the extra $6. My only concern is that with a Thermaltake Tsunami case and the Asus A8N-SLI mobo, am I going to have enough room for the 7700-Cu? Or is it going to be a tight fit?

You're exactly right; the difference is the size.

As for fitting, it's actually not usually a problem for a case, it's the mobo that holds you back. I'm fairly certain it fits on the A8N-SLI. My only recommendation is that you install the ram before the processor and heatink, because the 7700 will probobly overlap your 1st DIMM slot. It's well neigh impossible to install your RAM after you put the heatsink in.

Last question I have:

If I buy a Thermaltake Tsunami case w/side window. Should I replace all the stock case fans that come with the Tsunami? I believe it comes with 1 intake 120mm, 1 exhaust 120mm, and 1 side panel intake 90mm fans. Should I replace them all with panaflo fans or are the stock fans good enough to keep the temps down?

Honestly I could care less about noisy fans as long as they keep the inside of the case nice and cool. What are you thoughts on this topic? 🙂

I'm pretty certain the stock fans should be fine. At least try them, and see if they work. No sense in buying a bunch of fans if you don't end up using them 🙂

i think the problem with that case is that its really loud. ive just heard these things, i dont own one. it may be the specific fans they use, or just the design of the case that makes it so loud.

So the XP-120 Aluminum Heatsink will cool better than a 7700-Cu Copper HSF? You sure about that? I would think more along the lines of the XP-90 Copper Heatsink would cool better than the 7700-Cu but the money you pay for the XP-90 along with buying a 120mm fan would be much more expensive.

Kensai is sure (AFAIK) & I concur. Heatpipes > Copper in effectiveness & the cooling performance of the XP-120 is dependent on the [120mm] fan being used.

The XP-90C doesn't use 120mm fans. However, it has both copper & heatpipes so you can probably guess how it stacks up.

Also! as many here have recommended. Have a look-see here.

Ok great. Now I'm seriously considering getting the XP-120. Which 120mm fan do you recommend attaching to the XP-120?

I'm a silencentric to an extent so I would naturally recommend a Nexus. Although based on your preference (cooling rather than low noise), I'd go for something like this for maximum cooling performance.

Thanks thats a nice 120mm fan! Expensive but I believe it's the best you can get now. Just a stupid question here but, when I attach this 120mm fan ontop of my XP-120, should the fan be blowing IN the XP-120 or OUT away from it?

Try both ways and see what you get. Different people with different cases (airflow) have all gotten a mixed bag of results. In my case (Tsunami) I get the same temps exactly whether it is in "push" or "pull" configuration.

I own the Tsunami, "loud" is is subjective term. The case isn't loud to me, it's not quiet, but it's more then passable in my room, and I sleep close to the PC.

the fans make more of a whoosh noise, then a high pitched one (if that makes any sense) to me. I know I could do much better with after market fans, but 2 120's + an 80 would cost monies. You could get a fan controller and rpm the included ones down, and knock out the noise (if it bothers you that much)
