I have used this heatsink extensively in my other rigg and this rigg!!

It is well worth the money!! As far as cooling ram 99 times out a 100 your ram does not need any additional cooling!!

For example I have my CPU over clocked currently to sitting at 3.8 and my ram is doing just fine.....
I have had my PSU all the way up to 4.0+ and even without any aditional cooling my RAM was just fine.

Even though I corrently have a Zalman slim fan blowing air onto my RAM....mainly just for looks so I can say thats what I am doing..lol

As far as temps go YES it should reduce your temps but remember there are a whole lot of variables to take into account the main one being the airflow in your computer....

Good Luck!!

What case do you have? If you were able to fit both on that motherboard, you're going to end up pushing a lot of hot air towards the back of your case, and you'll need at least a 120mm fan at a fairly high speed to exhaust it fast enough, or twin 92mm would probably be better.

Here's the compatibility chart so you can get the dimensions and compare to your motherboard (which is not listed as being compatible, but you never know):

Thanks guys,

The case I have is this:
http://www.directron.com/superalien.html

It does have 2 80mm fans blowing out; there are a total of 6 case fans here, two in front of the HDD rack, one on the side panel just above the video card, and another on top of the case.

I was thinking, would it be possible to mount both of them at a 90degree angle from the standard mount, and have both of them blow in the same direction? That would make it a lot more likely that it will fit with this mobo. Would that be possible? or a good idea at all for cooling?

The mounting system for the 9500 lets you set it up in any direction, so that's a possibility.

If I get what you're saying, you want to have them pointing in the same direction back to back? Like this? (arrows are fan direction)

It'd be an interesting experiment, that's for sure. You're going to get some turbulence noise from the push/pull (unless you can control the RPMs so that they're the same), but the cooling should be very effective.

A possible problem - you're going to be pushing a lot of warm air toward the power supply, so it's going to make the PSU fan work a lot harder. Try to set up some sort of duct so that air bypasses the PSU going straight for the top exhaust fan.

That won`t be an issue unless the psu is passive and has no fans of iots own!!!

He will be just fine!!!

Well, I won't be getting these for at least another couple of weeks.

Would the best option be to switch the direction of the PSU fans, so that they intake from the case, and blow exhaust out? In that case, both HSFs blowing up would seem to be a very good idea, is that right?

Hard Ball:

It probably is not a good idea to exhaust the HSF air towards the PSU, especially if the PSU has temp monitoring and fill speed up the fan once it gets warm. I use a Artic Freezer 64 PRO and has the same feature as the Zalman; you can orient the fan in either direction. I face the HSF airflow towards the rear exhaust fan.

Not to hijack your thread, but you may want to look into the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO. Similiar performance of the Zalman but only $40 shipped from Newegg.

or:

I'll be running an opteron 170 or 175 with a Zalman 9500, So I think I'll need a proper case to keep things cool.

cya guys

Not true....I curently have my Zalman blowing the air towards the rear 120 mm fan..which is an exhaust fan...you will have no issues at all.
Also; not everybody is concerned with getting the cheapest priced products....
The Zalman looks good when its mounted on your mobo and there are so many variables that come with cooling your computer properly that I would tell you to get any of these heatsinks and you won`t go wrong....
Zalman 9500......Thermal Right...XP90copper and XP 120 and SI 120 as well as the Scythe Ninja as well as the Thermaltake Big Typhoon....

I would personally put the Arctic freezer 64 PRO in my second teir of heatsinks....just my opinion!!

Thanks for the suggestion,

but it doesn't seem that two of them will fit onto my board. My greatest concern is always how the HSFs work with the layout of the board; a lot of large HSFs will have problems fitting; and the 9500 is one of the few that seem to fit (at least on visual inspection).

And changing the direction of the blow is also mainly due to the considerations of the dimensions of the HSF and how two of them will align so that they are not too close together or touching.
