just reapplied AS5 as per some good instructions i found on this site.

(where you apply a thin layer all over)

re-applied the cooler, but noticed that i could wiggle it slightly to the left and right. is this right? im guessing not, but everything seems ok. the screws are screwed in as far as they go, and im using all the parts zalman provided for S939 installation.

would it be worth getting the HSF back out, and bending the spring arm up abit? so when i re-install it pushes down harder?

That's normal. TIM is a lubricant of sorts. It's keeping the two metal surfaces from touching. In a short amount of time, after several heating cycles it won't move.
Just use it, let it take it's set and don't keep checking it.

You know that "good instructions i found on this site" weren't the same as the ones that AS recommends, right? There's a reason why the company that specializes in thermal paste gives out those instructions and why you should use them instead of ones from some random post you read on the internet. Just my .02.

ok....AS' instructions are abit idecisive at best, this way does work. i did a super thin layer, rubbed it in abit to get the AS5 in the cracks, and then put a small blob right in the centre.

when i tighten my 7000 down it had no "wiggle" to it at all. you do have a back plate and all the little rubber washers on, right?

yeah, i took the rubber washers off since it was even worse with them on.... just took the fan assembly off it and bent the lever thingy up abit, seems to fit abit tighter now.

i havent had great luck with zalman to be fair, this is my 3 rd cooler, one was bodged to my old motherboard since ASUS glue gunned their own back plate to the board and it wasnt compatible with the zalman nipples.

this is the second cooler on this motherboard and both have had a very slight wiggle.

Bodged=Brit :D

Even when using the tiny dot method of applying AS5, I've been able to twist the 700 and 7000s I've installed but a very slight friction could be felt. I've never used a work-around to get one mounted, just installed as per instruction. When I removed the 7000 to use on my sister's rig it came off reluctantly, after two years of use.

yeah now there is a so very slight twist probably less than a degree and there is a friction....
im testing 100% load with S&M test utility (seems to stress harder than prime)

my comp was crashing earlier, but the temps cant of been higher then 50 (venice 3200 @ 2.5Ghz and 1.45Vcore)

having SLI doesnt really help my case either....they chuck out alot of heat when worked hard. im tempted to sell up and get a X1900XT since they perform about the same as 7800GT's in SLI for the most part

or i may dive into water cooling :D though i see most cheapish kits providing no more cooling performance than a good air cooler

I found that the 7000 is really dated. Moved to a 9500 and my Pressie dropped 10c. Without moving to a new cooler (as you already said you might) you'd probably have to run that obnoxious fan at 12v to get any decent cooling on your processor.
