Zalman 7000B Al-Cu

I've order mine a few days ago, it should arrive in a couple of days. I've been reading quite a few reviews of it, and some say that one should be careful when handling the computer case (moving it around, etc) because the Zalman is beyond the Intel recommended weight limit. In the other hand, other reviews state that the unit is within limits at 438gr. Wich one is true?

Anyway, I suppose that tilting the case to horizontal position before moving it around should be enough to avoid motheboard bending and/or broken clips.

If I had that heatsink, I would find a way to support the top by cross bracing it somehow. Lets say the likely scenerio that can happen if you have a tower is by some chance, it gets tipped over, either side, will the heatsink and your motherboard survive?

I use the 7000B in an Antec P160 case and an ASUS P4C800 mobo. Its a beast of a cooler but it works like magic. I've moved my unit around several times, even while running, and its been solid as a rock. The real kicker is how mounting brackets are attached to the mobo to support it. On the P4C800, there is black plastic on the underside of the mobo that the mounting screws all go through, spreading the load out across the entire area instead of just on the screw holes.

I've noticed that my Antec 3700AMB case has four holes in the mobo plate labeled "PI - Intel Pentium 4 CPU Hole". I'm assuming that they can be used to screw the mounting brackets screws to the mobo plate, giving the motherboard more stiffness. I could be wrong thou.

BTW, racolvin: What are your temps with th 3.4 Prescott and the Zalman? How about noise levels?

I'll be using the Antec 3700AMB with two Panaflo 120mm L1A fans (intake and exhaust). My CPU will be a 3.2, although not sure about a Prescott or a Northwood.

As reported by MBM, my idle temps are 40-41C, stressed I top out at 55C. As for noise levels, its quiet as a church mouse 🙂 I run the Zalman off the mobo at full speed, the case fan and the PSU fans of course, but frankly, my Shuttle SS51G is louder by far than my new rig, which I'm quite happy about 🙂 If I turn my Shuttle off, I can't hear a thing but _very_ faint hum from the PSU.

I only use the Zalman, the included 120mm case fan, and the fans from the PSU. The P160 case has an option for a second case fan but at those temps, I don't need it.

Those temps actually look like the same you would expect from the retail Intel HSF, I was hoping them to be lower, but I guess that's ok as long as it is quiet. Intel retail HSF are a bit too loud for my taste (although I've heard that the new ones coming with the LGA775 Prescotts are better).

Are you saying that you don't use the FanMate thingy? What kind if thermal paste are you using? I've also ordered a tube of Artic Silver 5.

Since I pieced my rig together (OEM version of processor, no HSF included), I don't know what the Intel retail HSF sounds like. I do not use the FanMate speed controller on my Zalman, simply because I didn't want to hang the thing outside my case, etc, which means my Zalman runs at full speed 24/7 but frankly I can't hear it. If for some reason you can hear it, using the FanMate would let you lower the RPM and supposedly lower the noise, but I have no clue what effect that would have on your temps. I also used the AS 5 thermal grease - love that stuff.

When you use the AS5, don't be stingy with it. Most recommendations are for a spot the size of a grain of rice. Well, ok, but it needs to be a plump grain of rice 😉

Here are arctic silver instructions in case anyone is interested:

I have P160, Zalman 7000A-AlCu with arctic silver 5 - all great products. Zalman is very quiet and easy to install. Used the instructions above and temps have been excellent. I believe the pure Copper (Cu) version of the Zalman is the most weighty and is the one to be most concerned about as far as weight goes.

I believe the AlCu falls right into Intel specs. The CU on the other hand is 2-3 times the spec weight.
