I got an email last night from Zales about their latest clearance sale... Zales has these sales every so often, where it's an extra 30% off of clearance. A lot of their items make awesome gifts. Every time I buy something from here everyone always thinks I spend a fortune, but zales just has really great sales :D

Also an extra 5% cash back from ebates.com

Last Christmas I bit on one of their earring deals. The quality was horrible. Wouldn't recommend unless you like rocksalt.

I had bought this ring (http://www.zales.com/product/i...oductId=2436098&kpc=1) for a friend of mine, and she absolutely loved it! I had also bought a pair of earrings, but like you said, the quality was horrible; but that was my own fault for not reading the description and how big the carat was :( Got too excited over the price and how it said "diamond" in the title.

NEVER buy from those mall jewelry stores.
Their markup is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE.
Blue Nile is your best bet.

I was going to grab a $200 pearl necklace for $80 on clearance. Doesn't seem bad. I would never buy serious jewelry from Zales though.

For jewelery under $100, it isn't bad at all. For engagement rings, do the girl a favor and go to a real store.

I like the disclaimer in fine print on their TV ads.

"May never have actually been sold at original price."

I called a local retailer to buy it there instead of online. She gave me all this crap about how they couldn't possibly be selling this type of pearl necklace for this cheap, they probably weren't blah blah blah this "name brand" etc. Yet the product number matched and so did the original MSRP which they were selling them for (clearance online). Now I'm afraid of a bait and switch...

Zales (and every other mall jewelry store) will continue making a profit, until the day they offer the stuff for FREE. I have seen 80% off sales, and believe me, they weren't losing money!!

If you want to find out how bad Zales rips you off, take a small scale and a calculator with you, and ask to see a gold chain. Weigh it, then use your calculator to figure out the value of the gold (weight, converted to troy ounces, times the carat quality of the gold divided by 24, times the going rate for gold on the market). You'll be shocked at how badly you're being ripped off (even on 50% off sales, it's not uncommon to see a 250% or higher markup from the value of the gold to the price being asked for it).

Add to that the fact that (as stated above) their stones are mostly crap, and also marked up horrendously, and you might as well just burn your money. Believe me, there's a reason they suggest you spend 2 months salary on an engagement ring!

If you know what sort of setting you like, you can buy them online, at a much better price than in a retail store. You can also buy stones online, then just pay someone to set the stone for you, and size the ring if it's not already sized for her finger. Geez, I'd almost rather buy jewelry from ebay than from a mall jeweler!!

Looks like I bought to early and didn't do enough research as to where to buy jewelery, the bluenile webpage certainly looks to be putting out a higher quality for the same price as a lot of the mall retailers. Oh well buyers remorse this year will turn into a smarter buy in the future, not that what I got was bad just overpriced.
