Does anybody see this as an invasion of privacy? I only see pretty basic information and mildy disturbing, however some people I know are very disturbed. What do you think?

Here is a link to a SF Chronicle article. According to this article, there is a Heavens Gate link involved with one of the operators of the Zaba website.

Doesn't seem like it gives you anything you can't get from a phone book...Name, Address, sometimes phone number and birth year. It's actually kinda cool....

it is public information, all of that stuff is already available through credit reporting agencies and other databases

I doubt its illegal but its disturbing. Birthdates are not necessarily public information, and credit reports aren't public information either.

The disturbing part must come from folks that didn't know that all this info was readily available long before zaba.
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to find phone numbers, addresses and the like on the intersne.

Virtually every major change in life is recorded somewhere in a government document. Shortly after you are born, a birth certificate is issued; if you obtain a driver's license, get married, buy a house, file a lawsuit--all of these events are recorded in public documents easily available to you and to others.

The thing that gets me is how many people share the same name... even unusual names.

I thought zabasearch was gonna be the holy grail for information...but it isn't much more than a google search can come up with.

They got my name and address, very impressive. We are unlisted so my name doesnt usually show up on white pages searches or anything.
Even US search.com only shows my name but no address.

many county governments have put a lot of private information online in an effort to "modernize" , they are just dumping data online without privacy/security oversight

http://www.opcva.com/watchdog/060505.html

that page will tell you how to get the SSN of a US Congressman from Kansas City
along with a bunch of other politicians

SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO FIND SSNS WHEN THE RECORDS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET.... WHY WOULD ANYONE IN JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI WANT THESE RECORDS ON THE INTERNET? AND WHY WOULD ANYONE IN THE STATE OF MISSOURI WANT THEM ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB?

I GUESS IT'S NOT CALLED THE "SHOW ME" STATE FOR NOTHING...BECAUSE PUTTING THESE RECORDS ON THE WWW IS RECKLESS, DANGEROUS AND STUPID...THEY ARE SHOWING THE WORLD THESE RECORDS!
