Okay so im building a computer for my younger brother, i4690k, 16 gig of ram, crucial 240 gig ssd, 2 tb seagate hd, evga 600 watt psu, gtx 970 and a z97s krait edition. I have tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in trying each hard drive on its own, tried both sticks of memory in different slots and 1 stick of memory in the different slots, I even tried my own memory from my computer which is a different brand. All i seem to get is boot cycles i see the bios and can go into it for a minute or so and then it resets so i took that board back we bought another motherboard different brand a gigabyte ga-z97x-sli and another psu 600 the very same thing is happpening what is wrong with these mother boards or is it something else? This one i cant even access the bios each turns on for a bit doesnt display anything with the video card and without out it using the motherboards hdmi.

Is the PC on the same circuit as an air conditioner? If so, try moving it.

It seems somewhat wierd that the first board, would POST, let you into BIOS, and then reboot about a minute after being in there.

Unless.. did you attach the CPU cooler properly? If the CPU overheats too badly, the board will shut off.

In all honesty every time I've encountered a system that would power down unexpectedly the power supply was at fault. Does that board show the bios codes on the screen while it is booting? If so what code shows when this is happening? The last number you see is the problem and you have to look it up in the manual. Also before you attempt to install windows disconnect all the hd's except the ssd boot drive and then add them back after windows has installed.

It's a thermaltake case with the raised standoffs already there. could it be the case itself shorting the boards.

Problems like this should probably be diagnosed on the bench, not in the case. System builders should also have as many spare parts available as practical, especially a known good PSU

This seems highly unlikely. Since you have already mentioned switching the PSU, I find it also highly unlikely of encountering a broken PSU the second time.

I'm thinking you could try this if you hadn't already:
Simplify things a little and check if you can get a stable system!

1. Completely uninstall/remove the gpu! Connect the monitor to the onboard intel HD!
2. Disconnect everything from the mainboard(storage devices included, mainboard system fans-leave CPU fan connected :) -if this is the case)!
3. Install only one module of RAM! Plug in keyboard, mouse, power, and power on the system.

Edit: Forgot to mention one thing. Disconnect all motherboard case front panel leds/switches, including usb/hd audio header if you've got any of those connected. Connect only the power switch(power sw header). Power sw is the only thing that you need in order to power on the system.

At this point the system should be stable. No resets or boot loops are allowed. If it's not, then something is definitely broken.

I like the idea of trying it out of the case. A short somewhere would exhibit similar behavior.

One time I encountered a power problem that was hard to diagnose and it turned out that one of my molex power wires had backed out of a connector and was ground out on the chassis. If a wire has grounded your ps protection circuitry will not allow it to power up.
