If I put my graphics card in the main 16x slot then put something (a sound card) in the final slot on the motherboard which is also 16x, will this cut the speed of the main 16x slot by half?

Does it depend on the motherboard?

If the mobo is wired up for x16/x0, or x8/x8, then yes, your primary slot will drop to x8, when you put something in the secondary slot.

If the mobo is wired such that the primary slot is x16, and the secondary is x4, then no, it won't drop down the primary slot. The reason being, is that the x4 slot is most likely driven off of the PCH chipset, and not the CPU.

Ah cool, yeah its x4, think some boards said something about the x1 slots being disabled when that x4 slot is in use.

Was comparing these two boards:

The MSI is as follows: Gen3 (16,0,0) (8,8,0) (8,4,4)

The gigabyte is like you say.

Bear in mind if you are considering the gigabyte, it is H87 and therefore not overclockable.
