Z68 SSD Caching with XP pro.

Is it possible without reinstalling windows? Can I just take the hd from my old xp machine, stick it in a Z68 motherboard and turn on ssd caching, with no issues?

I ask because I have a 'Mission Critical' Xp machine that needs to stay as an XP machine with all the 32 bit programs I have with it that just don't function well in XP mode in 7. And it's getting freaking slow.

wouldnt vmware software be better at emulating win xp environment? you should try it and see if your programs work. It seems xp direct install is left behind with newer tech.

Look the Machine needs to remain with XP Pro as the primary drive. I under any circumstances, I cannot install Win 7(As much as I want to), Nor is Virtualization an Option.

1. Ah shit. I wasn't referring to anyone here. I was in a game yelling at the fucking incompetent people on my team.

2. It' supposed to work. I just ordered the parts.

I take it you are adding another, new, seperate SSD as the caching drive?

I don't see any issue as long as the primary drive remains exactly that, the primary drive without any controller / raid changes. Only issue you might encounter is possibly page file issues with the new SSD drive installed?

Maybe tell us the specs of the machine you are moving it from?

Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8ghz s478.
Asus Intel 875 chipset
1.5gbs ram.
120gb HD
Radeon x300se

The software I'm using is very proprietary and Amd chipsets it does not like. Nor can I run it in VM because that would violate the EULA and my support contract with the Manufacturer would be null and void.

XP mode does not violate EULA but it is not supported and it slows to a crawl.

If you are running a 120GB hd now, I would recommend to go with an Intel 510 120GB. That will provide you with the best mix of speed/reliability. I cant see any reason for you to use SRT if you dont need more than 120GB.

I would think that using a straight SSD would be the answer TBH, but my concern would be lack of TRIM support. I'm not sure if SRT supports TRIM or some sort of garbage collection either, but man, unless this is software that you are using isn't going to be upgraded within the next year or so, I'd stay far away from SSD's with XP just for the simple fact that if this is mission critical data, i.e. you could lose lots of time/money invested when the machine/ssd goes kaput, data recovery AFAIK, would be pretty much non-existent. Running an SSD without TRIM or even grabage collection would greatly shorten the lifespan of that drive and you'd be looking at replacing more then likely before the warranty is up.

You'd be much better suited running like a RAID 0 with some sort of backup, or even a RAID 10 if that MoBo supports it.

God you people suck.
