Planning to build a decent all-round computer.

Here is what I need it to do:

* Run CAD/CAM programs like Solidworks & Fusion 360, and other low to mid range CAD/CAM programs. Will not be using high-end CAD/CAM programs like Siemens NX or Catia.

I will not be doing complex Solidworks design, like assemblies with several dozens parts or flow simulation.

* In the future I plan on getting into some simple video editing for content creation.

*Gaming. Latest FPS games, especially Far Cry.

So should I go with a Z390 or X299 chipset?.

Is the X299 chipset platform more stable than Z390, and if so is the difference considerable or minor?

I would say Z390, or even better, wait for the Ryzen 3k reviews, that might be the best choice. X299 as I have seen has had a fair amount of issues/quirks, seems that is the nature of HEDT platforms as of late.

I compared these two for my latest system build, having come from an excellent Asus x99 board. In user reviews, I found absolutely no issues with the z 390 chip boards but beaucoup des problems arising from similar boards with the x299 . Plus the latter boards are more expensive than one carrying the z390. I went with the 9900k/z390 combo and have no regrets.

Now that the reviews are out, I would likely recommend the Ryzen 3k series for you, unless you need absolutely the highest FPS in shooters, then I would say go for the 9900k + Z390.
