Z170 (MAXIMUS VIII Ranger) and few Windows 10 USB-problems

Hello

I installed Z170 + 6700K last week and started having problems with Windows 8.1 and USB devices. But I did not pay much of attention to this since the plan was to install fresh W10 on SM951, but the drive was out of stock when I bought the Mobo+CPU. And Skylake does not have legacy USB support anymore, so I just thought that switching mobo without OS reinstall caused these problems. Well yesterday they shipped my SM951 so I installed CLEAN (not upgrade) Windows 10 Enterprise on it.

The install went smoothly and drivers installed properly. But I have few problems:

- USB 3 hub keeps disconnecting and reconnecting all the time
- If I unplug my Mouse (USB) and replug it, it refuses to start properly again.
- Sometimes when I plug an USB device, my mouse left button stop responding.

Anyone else experiencing these problems with Z170 and USB? Any solutions? All the USB-devices worked perfectly with my P67EVO-motherboard.

I have disabled USB selective suspend. No difference.
I have disabled USB 3.1 support from BIOS. No difference.

Might be exclusively the Asmedia devices. Did you disable the Asmedia controller completely, or did you disable it some other way? I am looking at your BIOS manual now.

Disabled from BIOS. Both the controller and the ports.

Try this dawg:

AS Media USB Driver 1.16.26.1 (Windows 10)

Before you attempt to install the USB Driver, make sure you don't have anything connected to the AS Media USB ports, once the driver is installed, restart, then only connect your USB devices to the AS Media Ports.

I already have this installed. It is the one from ASUS's support webpage.

Disabled from BIOS. Both the controller and the ports.

Update:
I had only disabled the ports and not the actual controller. So now after I have disabled the controller I can get all the USB-devices online, but a new symptom has occurred: Every time I start a software or a game the whole USB-list gets refreshed in Device Manager and if I enable the default Windows Sound Scheme I hear the device "disconnect" and "reconnect" sound chimes.

Something weird is happening. I installed USBDeviewer and even it can't catch what device does it. The disconnect and reconnect is so fast. It could also be the actual root hub that disconnects.

I guess I have to just suck it up and wait for update for either motherboard firmware or Windows 10.

Glad you found the USB controller option.

IMO, this is what happens when you have a new controller an new OS being released in relatively the same time frame. It could just be a matter of time for new drivers to get everything worked out.

I do have an idea though (as your on-board USB connections are laid out similar to mine): do you have USB ports (on the front of your case or otherwise) using the USB 3 connector on the board? Even on my board in Windows 7 this is not a stable connection. I blame some of this on Asus, as this is a side connector, not a down into-the-board connector (I need to look at it again, but I don't know if the case cable is long enough to reach the other one at the bottom of the board). So I might suggest unplugging any cables used for external USB connections, and see if that changes anything.

Are you at BIOS 0401?

Yes.

I have my Fractal Design R4's front USB-panel connected to motherboard's USB3_12 (page 1-7 @ manual). I have nothing connected to the front USB-panel though. I will try this next time I have to power down my computer. This connection worked fine with P67EVO and is working fine now if I plug in USB-drive to the front USB-panel.

Ah, the quiet one. I like the FD cases. I have our home server in a Core 3300 and it has been a very good case.

Yes and even though this is for your motherboard, this actually fixed the USB issues I've been having for the As Media USB ports which randomly would give me an exclamation mark in device manager since ASUS didn't publish the AS Media USB Driver for my X-99 Deluxe motherboard but I tried the ones from your motherboard download page and it worked, it's the same USB controller.
