I think I have narrowed the decision down to these two. Which set should I get and why?

It seems like just about everything is 5.1 now (movies, games, multi-channel music, etc.)

I'd go with z-5300s.

The z-560s have more wattage, but I'm not sure if the efficiency of the z-560s and z-5300s are the same so I'm not sure on overall volume differences. I know my z-560s were able to play much louder than I ever wanted them to.

In reference to Yoyoyo's comment, I'd get the ones that play better, not louder. Most speakers go loud enough, I turn my 60 dollar Z-530's up about a forth of the way up and that's about as loud as I ever want it. I don't know about the two that you listed, but whichever have better quality over loudness is what I'd go with.

I didn't mean it to sound like I thought whatever was louder was better, just that power seems to be the main thing the z-560s have going for them.

I haven't heard the z-5300s, but I think I've read that the sub is a little tighter and the satellites are a little better vs the z-560s, but they may not have the volume the z-560s had... if you're looking for the loudest thing you can get, then z-560s should be the better choice, but the z-5300s sound a little better (so I've read) and you get 5.1 vs 4.1

Huh?

All I have to say is, i'd take quality over quanity.

Z-560's are Z-680's without a center channel, and controll pod. same sub, same sats.

The z-680's are a z-5500 system with a 8 inch sub.

Are the z-560s really better than the z-5300s? Both retailed for about $140 from newegg.

I haven't heard the z-5300s, just my z-560s that I had for a couple years. The bass on the z-560s was very boomy. I thought the 5300s had more controlled bass from what I have read, and I thought the satellites were of similar quality too.

I know the 560s and 680s are basically the same system, but I don't think the z-5500s can be called a 680 set with a 10" sub. They changed the satellites on that set too.

the z5300 aren't nearly as clear as the z560 IMHO. you can adjust the bass with on the 560 if its too much.

All Logitech systems are boomy, period.

The 5500s sats cant be that much better than the 680's. They dont even offer tweeters.

Not all of them have boomy bass :p

So the 5500 sats can't be that much better than the 680s, but the 560s can be a lot better than the 5300s? I thought these were all 3" full range satellite drivers on these sets. I was unaware that the 5300s satellites were inferior to the other sets. The "z" series came out well after I was looking at computer speakers, so I didn't really look into them too much.

Oh... I see the 5300s have a 2.5" driver that is unrelated to the drivers in the upper range logitech sets.

But yeah, if you're really looking for quality over quantity, then logitech isn't the best game in town. The logitech sets offer good value in this range, but you can get a really nice 2.0 or 2.1 set in this pricerange.

I'm also talking about the huge hump in frequency response at around 40hz from the set. It could have been my room acoustics, but in both my dorm room and basement at home, there was a huge 15dB hump in the 38 to 45 hz range when I was testing.

I ahve the z-5300e's and really enjoy them. I bought them from newegg a while back and truly love them. Peoples always ask me to put that in my car or theres...its so funny. I enjoy playing games with 5.1 urround sound and liek that you can mount the sattelites on the walls. There is plenty of bass, but the speakers are just decent as with any logitechs. If you have a nice ound card such as a santa cruz or audigy 2+ you can adjust them to sound even better...such as the eq(effets), types of music, size of room, etc. The only thing the z-5300e's are missing is a remote
