z-5500/audigy2 problem

I have a set of logitech z-5500's hooked up to my Audigy 2. Not ZS. About a week ago, when I double clicked the audigy 2 sound control thing on my taskbar to access the surround mixer, an error message pops up saying that "the selected sound card is not supported by the application." This is still the case. Around the same time, I have started getting random... blips... or... pops... coming from the speakers, while playing mp3's. The pops occur completely randomly and sporadically. If there is any sort of pattern to when it happens, I havn't caught on.

Any ideas?

Also... I'm just using the 3 analog cables supplied with the z-5500's. Is it worth it to invest in a digital cable? I've read what I need to get to do so.

Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers and sound utility program (if they are separate)

I wouldn't bother with the digital connection unless you simply can't get this to work right... the digital connection may not affect the problem at all either. If you have a nice card like your Audigy, I think it's kind of pointless to use z-5500s in digital mode because you'll bypass the Audigy DACs and use the ones that are in the control pod for the speakers (not sure on the quality of those, but I'd suspect they're not so great).
