I'm running 5 hard drives and right now they're all crammed into a very tight space and if I do not point a house fan directly at the open side of my case, they get well beyond uncomfortably hot to touch, bordering on hot enough to BURN! Obviously this can't be good for the drives, so I'm looking at upgrading my case (one of those old old antec jobs with the door on front.. ) to something a bit roomier, with a specific emphasis on expansion and cooling..

something that can be purchased without a psu would be best as I already have one that suits me.

suggestions? I like the YY-0221 because it has 8 internal 3 1/2inch bays and they're separated from the motherboard so that I can focus on cooling that side. any alternatives should have a similiar layout/capacity.

edit: I just realized that "where to buy" is a stupid question that google can better answer.

You may want to rethink the YY-0221. I bought one a while back and reused it when I assembled my current machine... I moved to a Cooler Master RC-690 shortly thereafter. :) My primary issues were cooling and cabling. The YY only allows for one 92mm (front, motherboard compartment) and two 80mm fans (rear, drive compartment). So, it's on the noisy side and doesn't allow for much airflow. The motherboard compartment is also quite narrow and somewhat cramped, which hinders cooling even more, and is not deep enough to accommodate most tower style CPU coolers or passive VGA coolers (e.g.: Arctic Cooling Accelero S1). My P5K-E didn't install properly either (didn't line up with the back plate) so I had to use several brass washers to raise the standoffs. Lastly, cable management is essentially NIL and short of removing the front cover the YY very much requires tools. :/

As much as I appreciate the concept behind the dual chamber design (I bought one didn't I), the YY-0221 is showing it's age. I bought mine many years ago (think Athlon Thunderbird times) and case design/cooling performance has come a long way since then.

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions if you're set on a cube style chassis.

I see.. Well, I guess I'm not as set on a cube as I thought I was.

I'm open to anything that wont suck. I've been in the same case since the Thunderbird days, so i'm about due for an upgrade. My fans are dying off one at a time and my case is really showing its age. I can't bring myself to replace it with any old, flashy POS though.. I really want something that will last me another 5 years or so.

:) thanks for the input though, you've saved me from making a terrible mistake!

The Ultra m998 should cool the drives pretty well. The Silverstone Kublai series and similar w/ cage-mounted drives as each cage has its own fan. Cooler Master 590 or 690, etc.

..bh.

No problem. I was disappointed that my YY cube didn't work out with my new machine but I have been impressed by the Cooler Master 690 and feel it will suit me just fine for quite a while.

What about the RocketFish aluminum tower from BestBuy? It offers six hard drive bays in the center-bottom of the case (check out the photos):

If you only need space for 5 HDD's there are a lot of options out there.

Check out the Lian Li / Lancool PC-K7 - its got 5 HDD slots with rubber grommet mounts that have 2x 120mm fans blowing across them. There's a version with a door too if that is more to your tastes.
looks like its on sale @ newegg right now too http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811112154
