Yuri's continued Ivy overclocking attempts

Currently overclocking using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility with mostly default settings. Voltage is set to Offset mode in bios. Using BFG680w PSU & G.Skill Sniper ULV RAM (9-9-9-24@1.25v) on ASRock Z77 Extreme4. Using a Swiftech Apogee block with an MCP355 pump and triple rad.

I have LLC off right now as it has resulted in lower stable full load voltages and has no effect on idle and non-turbo frequencies. In attempting to get 4.7Ghz stable it wasn't useful either.

In previous posts others have commented on my temps and questioned my mounting, so I first tried remounting with no change in temps. I pulled my waterblock apart and cleaned it and had no improvement (it was very clean anyway). I purchased a different mounting bracket from Swiftech and remounted with this, again with no improvement. My conclusion is that my mount is fine. The total wattage output of the chip is relatively low, the block and water stay cool to the touch, so all that's left is that I'm running into thermal density/IHS limitations right now.

Idle temps: 32 / 26 / 25 / 25

Cores in order of highest temperature under load: 3 / 1 / 2 / 4


Overclocking results from my Ivy chip:

4.3Ghz:
Stable at -14mv = 1.144v (as reported by CPU-Z)
75c Linpack loaded (peak on hottest core)
71c Prime loaded
Draws approximately 80w (found by limiting TDP and checking for throttling in Linpack)

4.4Ghz:
Stable at +41mv = 1.200v
81c Linpack loaded
75c Prime loaded
Draws approximately 92w

4.5Ghz:
Stable at +96mv = 1.256v
89c Linpack loaded
82c Prime loaded
Draws approximately 104w

4.6Ghz:
Stable at +147mv = 1.296v
98c Linpack loaded
91c Prime loaded
Draws approximately 120w

4.7Ghz:
At this point I was unable to get it even close to stable at any voltage. I increased it up to +240 offset with no success. Temps were hovering around 102c Prime'd with no chance of running Linpack. I turned on Internal PLL Overvoltage and attempted the entire voltage range again with no improvement.

I decided to run through my other frequencies and see if having iPLLov enabled would allow me to lower my voltage at all, but it did not, not even one 3.9mv tick, so I went back in bios and turned it off.

I'm a bit frustrated that I'm limited to 4.6Ghz with such moderate voltage. Any suggestions on other settings that might help get 4.7 stable?

Anyhow it's a fast chip and I really don't "need" the extra speed as I'm video-card limited in games and do very little heavy computation, so even if I get 4.7 stable I'm not going to leave it at that. Currently I'm trying to decide what speed to run at for day-to-day use. 4.6Ghz draws 50% more power under load than 4.3Ghz for a 7% theoretical performance improvement, but it idles most of the time and draws next to no power when idling. Do you guys think 300mhz is worth pumping an extra 0.15v though my chip?

Keep the temps lower and you'll probably be able to achieve 4.7GHz. To get mine stable at 4.7GHz, I have to pump in 1.4V which is more than what I consider safe. I'm playing safe with the voltages for daily usage and the only overclocking settings I'm using is the one stated in my signature. It will boot and run some tests but it isn't as stable as I like it to be.

Its odd as we have almost similar ambient and idle temps, you have a bigger radiator than mine but I'm able to do with lower temps. Haven't seen it go near 95C or higher yet.

Have either of you guys delidded your chips? That whole issue with the temps on ivy is the main reason I am hesitant to get one, besides the cost of building a new system of course :D

I read that some who delid'd didn't see much of an improvement, just a few C. Judging by my temps I'd probably have a large improvement though. Ivy just runs hot.

Fantastic chip if all you want is 4.6 though.

The temps on mine is acceptable, not to say that I'm happy with it being slightly higher than SB at a given setting. I would like a SB that does 5GHz on a daily basis but if that means I would have to pump in a lot more voltage to achieve that, I won't do it, even if the temps are acceptable. I'm in IB's sweet spot in terms of voltage, temp and frequency. If I have to go any higher I'll get myself a dewar and ....:sneaky:
