Will the MPX boards be cheaper than the Tyan Tiger MP?

Supposedly the same, maybe cheaper.

This may be *the* MPX board to get. It's the only one to claim that it has no USB woes like the Asus and other boards ... and that's without shipping a PCI card. It also has the NIC onboard and you still get 4 32-bit/33-MHz PCI slots!

The only complaints would be no IDE RAID onboard nor is there USB 2.0. But, I think a majority of the enthusiasts out there would pass on those features.

Here's to hoping it ships as soon as the Epox technician states it will (two weeks). :)

The USB flaw in the AMD 768 southbridges that are shipping from ASUS and others are only with very specific configurations (a certain OS, NIC, video card, and something else I believe). Besides, the MPX boards from ASUS, etc. solve the USB 1.1 issue by just offering USB 2.0 instead.

Since AMD has already fixed this issue (and Epox has benifitted from it) I'd say everything will be fine for future MPX boards (MSI, Abit, etc.).

That issue appeared with the 3Com on-board LAN.

Seems to me ASUS would have been better off swapping in Intel 82559 or even Realtek, rather than removing the USB ports and throwing in a 2.0 PCI card.

M762A looks good. :D

I like how dual CPUs are becoming more common amoung mainstream users now. After I get a car and pay the insurance off for 6 months, the next move is a dual MP board. MMMmmm.

I think you guys are missing a few subtle points here. :)

But first, let me correct myself. The Epox board only has 3 32-bit/33MHz PCI slots.

Looking that the official A7M266-D page, there is NO ONBOARD LAN. May I take one of your 32/33 PCI slots for that? Oh, NO ONBOARD USB. Lemme grab another PCI slot for the included USB 2.0 controller card. And, you want to use your snazzy sound card over the embedded one? Sure! NO MORE 32/33 PCI slots for you! I hope you weren't planning on a dual-head set-up with a PCI card. If any of you are enthusiasts, I'm sure you don't like being limited.

Also note that the 66/64 slots are keyed differently, so it may be unlikely, if not dangerous, to put any other 32/33 PCI card in one of those slots.

(Someone can step in, if my information is incorrect.)

I've only seen two MPX boards (the new Tyan Tiger and Iwill's offering) that have 4 32/33 PCI slots. If these boards ship with the USB-deficient southbridge, a PCI slot shortage could be headed your way as well.

I admit, I could be off, ... but I believe that the Epox board is the only one thus far to claim to have surmounted the USB issue (via a new southbridge revision or whatever). I'm hoping to find out in two weeks, according to an early shipping estimate. On top of that, the NIC is onboard, so that is a savings of two PCI slots since I won't have to add a NIC nor a USB controller. (BTW, I have 6+ USB devices, so the USB issue is very important to me.) Granted, my Santa Cruz may not need all of that extra room, but, hey, you never know! :p

Someone on AOAForums claims that the M762A is now available in Italy. The next week or so could be interesting. :)

Looking at that USB card, it looks like it's keyed for a 64-bit slot to me. Your point is valid, though.

The PCI slot problems is not a problem for everyone, including me. Although, I do like to have options open to me.

Sure, you don't need the PCI slots now ... but when you find out you need them, ...

Although the Epox board now has my full undivded attention, I don't think anyone over at 2CPU.com has gotten the Asus USB controller working in a 64/66 PCI slot on their mobo. Granted, I could be wrong. Keyed for the slot is one thing. Actually working in that slot is another. :/

The Epox rep has posted a one-page PDF on the M762A in the AOA Forums link I posted above. It sucks for English, but it seems to be a sign of what's headed our way.
