Yuck! One of my cats' "glands" is "smelling".

One of our two cats ocassionally gets smelly "in the back". I just had her on my lap because she likes to sit on anybody and she was purring and all that and then a moment laterly I realized she stank something nasty. Both of our cats are fixed. Anybody else got a cat that sometimes does this?

Can you describe the smell in detail? It could help figure out what's so malodorous.

Our cat has this problem. You need to take her to the vet and have her anal glands expressed.

Sounds gross and it is gross. And it STINKS. You shouldn't need an appointment to take the cat in to do this.

Cats and dogs have two little glands just below their anus (hey, I just used the word "anus" in Off-Topic in a non-flame context...cool ) that usually express on their own during a littebox/yard visit, but occasionally get backed up. You can clean them out (express them, in other words) by squeezing just below them with your thumb/finger. It's gross, and smells TERRIBLE, but it's easy to do and cheaper than paying your vet to do it.


Skoorb: get some gloves and give it a try (or have your vet show you how the first time). I'd suggest doing it outside or in the tub (and bathe the cat afterwards). You kinda squeeze up and in just below their booty. Just make sure the cat is pointed away from you if you try this......there is truly not a fouler smell on the planet.

After the first time paying the vet to do it my mom always did it herself.

She has virtually no sense of smell though, so it doesn't bother her.
