ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - It’s like your car’s license plate, but for your bike.
Two bills recently introduced in the state Assembly would require that all bikes in the state be registered each year and sport a license plate.
Assemblyman Michael DenDekker introduced the measures.
The first applies to personal bicycles. The license plate would cost $25 for the first year and $5 each year after.
The second bill would require a $50 license plate fee for commercial bikes. It would also require casualty insurance.
All bikes would have to pass a safety inspection -- including lamp and equipment requirements -- to get the license.
Anyone under 18 would have a special mark on their plate.
If passed, DenDekker estimated the state would bring in more than $1.8 million in the first year and $375,000 each following year.

Here's my commentary: New York can suck my balls if they think I'm going to pay for a license plate for my 10 speed.

What's next? License plates for skateboards? Rollerskates? What about Lolerskates? Yeesh...can't they just say: We're broke, getting broker (in the same dictionary as strategery), and we need to raise taxes. ?

Unreal.....

I agree that bikes should have license plates and carry insurance. You want to be a big boy and ride on the roads like cars then you should have to be insured and trackable like a car.

Since that would make NY the first place in the... world to require license plates for 10-speeds, it seems that 6 billion or so people disagree with you. Even a little 5 year old on a bike with training wheels would be required to have a license plate. So, for poorer families, you're tacking on $25 to the cost of every bicycle. (Let's just encourage them to sit on the couch and play video games some more.)

Insurance? For what? You trying to make the insurance companies wealthier?

Pretty ridiculous. It probably comes from all those people in NYC that like to bitch about bikes. Sure, there are definitely some assholes on bicycles, but plenty more car drivers or air-headed pedestrians that feel that they can walk when and wherever they want (in bike lanes, against the light, wandering into the street absent-mindedly).

I would love to see them enforce something like this... As if the cops don't have enough to do as it is.

Not true. My parents talked about having to do this in a relatively small town in Wisconsin when they were growing up. No, I don't have a source/reference, you'll have to take my word for it.

EDIT: Also, I agree that the idea is ridiculous.

You had to have seen this coming.

With them losing revenue on cars because of gas prices with people switching to bicycles they have to keep getting that money from somewhere.

Starts off at $25 but in five years will be $3,000

Exactly what I thought lol. Depending on the congestion of bikes, they shouldn't have the same wearing effects as cars though. Need for personal transportation can also be offset by more public transportation like trains (seriously America, get some more damn trains!).

I remember getting licenses for our bikes in Kenosha, Wi. Was a hard to remove sticker that was placed on the seat tube tho as far as I can recall it wasn't required and was more for theft recovery purposes than any thing else.

Another person who no doubt doesn't ride a bike and looks down upon those who do.

Insurance for what? Are many people driving cars being killed by cyclists running lights? This is a solution to a problem that does not exist.

What an incredibly stupid idea, but then again, you get what you pay (or vote) for. People keep voting these idiots into office, they can expect to keep getting idiotic legislation....

One of my friends was hit by a bicyclist about ten years ago when she was walking down a city sidewalk. She had a preexisting condition (MS) but that accident essentially destroyed her life and mobility much as a car-pedestrian accident would.

The town I grew up in the sixties required bike licenses. I don't know if they still do or not.

Fuckers. We are literally moving into realm where it's more beneficial for you to not work than work if you're poor.

Exactly. Part of my childhood was spent in Mitchell, Indiana. I had to have a license plate on my bike there. I got caught without one once and had my bike impounded by the police for a week. You can only imagine how scary it is for an 11 year old on his bike to be pulled over by a police cruiser. That was ~30 years ago.
A**hole cops, right there.

We had stickers for registration, too (early '70s). Don't remember if it cost anything but it didn't last long. Think the cops had better things to do. You know, doughnuts and all.

Edit: Would I pay for one? Yes because I ride a lot. Would I try to vote a few pricks out of office next go round? Yes.
