Let's talk emails. Doesn't seem to fit into Networking or Open Source or any of the other categories.

I have accounts with ProtonMail, Mail.com, Outlook, Vivaldi, Yahoo (rarely used any more), my DSL/Telco ISP and my own hosting account. Most work well, some have glitches. Mail.com is fine, but they have nags for paid services and limit POP3 and IMAP access.

Seems like the greatly intrusive Googly Monster isn't too fond of their free service any more and have tried to force many onto a paid service.

Still using Gmail.... privacy concerns aside it's pretty close to bulletproof-reliable.

I am however in the process of eliminating the need for a paid Google One account by going through and deleting most of my old messages.

Yahoo, Gmail, Isp for me. Yahoo is the oldest, and the one I use the most.

I also have the one my ISP provides, but it is unused, however I do look at it usually when I log in to my ISP account to view my bill out of morbid curiosity. OMG, 90%+ crap and spam.

My gmail is legacy use only. I just have it so people I haven't contacted in awhile can get in touch with me. I also use yandex, disroot, and netcourrier. I pay for the latter two, either as donation, or for "premium" service. Always with a client. I only use webmail when I absolutely have to.

I'm 100% the exact opposite.... I only use a local email-client when I need the digital equivalent of a "hard-copy". Messages/forms stored in Gmail are likely safer from being lost somehow then on my local PC anyway.

The LAST thing I want is every email message downloaded directly to my hard-drive .... security-wise it's a very bad idea.

Why's that? I block remote content. I want every message on my pc so I don't have to rely on a foreign server to read old mail.

Which is why I use clients. I have old Opera 10 still running which basiclly only works for email any more. There have been quite a few times when I've done searches for old emails about when I bought something 10 or 15 years ago. The associated web mail accounts may be long gone, but I still have the emails for reference.

I use Thunderbird, and for the longest time I was just hosting my own email. Had server issues a while back and to get stuff up and running faster I moved everything to a shared host. Slowly transitioning stuff back to self hosted but not really in a hurry since the shared host seems to work fine.

I do have my own local mail server though. Fetchmail runs every 5 minutes to get mail from internet servers and stores it on the local imap server. The local server is also what does spam filtering. So when I check my mail I'm really just connecting to the local imap server. That setup is from the early 2000's and works well enough that I never bothered to change it. I do like having all my mail on a local server though, since it's easier to automate backups.

I've had my primary Gmail since approx 2005... I believe I've not been able to login twice for about 5-10 minutes each in that time and I've never lost a single scrap of data saved in an email.

I don't LIKE Google anymore then you do but credit where credit's due.... we've truly reached the point that if Gmail/Google goes down for any extended period of time it's extremely likely that we will have other more important things to worry about!

I should start insisting that people send me messages on my Yahoo account. I actually got it before Yahoo had the account. They transferred another site's accounts in.....and my username is 5 characters long.

I joined Yahoo when I switched my then isp, and didn't want to use Aol mail. The funny thing is that's what I have now, because Verizon switched all their email accounts to Aol. It still says verizon.net though.
Just send one email to your people letting them know to you Yahoo to reach you. When I did that, it really chopped down my contact list.

Because you're downloading external data from unknown sources directly onto your HD and often un-attended?



Webmail is exponentially more safe/secure and "local" email clients that automatically check/download email are some risky/obsolete stuff.

Also clients built into web-browsers MAY be updated more frequently but otherwise are in many ways worse then stand-alone email apps due to increased "threat-exposure".

It's just text. There /may/ be some kind of exotic attack I'm unaware of, but code downloading, installing, then executing is *highly* improbable.

Gmail since it was beta but before that it was Hotmail. Hotmail account is still active, but I get 98% SPAM on there.

Gmail as more of a junk collector and my ISPs webmail. Used Thunderbird but forgot to copy all my settings before replacing computer and haven't been able to get it working on new computer. Looking for another local client to use, I hate web based email, prefer text only.

Have you actually used Gmail? It's snappy, search is great and doesn't try to be "helpful" (read: annoying) like Outlook 365 putting mails in Junk/Clutter or giving weekly reminders of how much "quiet" time I've had etc. Outlook 365 web mail is also slow and sometimes becomes unresponsive. You are screwed if you have to depend on it for actual work.

That's weird. Try using Outlook 365 search function. You will feel better about Gmail.
