YouTube... WTF

Interesting.... I have Adblock Plus running on Firefox and Chrome BUT I also pay for "Premium". (mainly for music on phone)

I wonder if that $ means I get a pass?


Premium DOES slip in the occasional ad on mobile that AB+ still stops in Windows 10.

Youtube pulled the plug on me a few day's ago, no ad's, no youtube. I turned off adblock and discovered that youtube so polluted that it's unwatchable. It's a shame, but I understand google needs to make money just like everyone else. I may pay the premium for a month so I can finish my Lightburn education, but then I'm all done.
 
I don’t mind ads ( I like a lot of smaller channels) what bothers me are ads that are longer than the video itself! I have been seeing a lot of ads that are 15 minutes or longer lately. I want to support content creators but hit the skip ads button when those come on.
 
15 min ads that's insane lol. They really are trying to see how far they can push things. Advertisers can't be dumb enough to think people are actually going to sit through that, I wonder how much they pay for such ad spots.
 
I use adblock plus on Chrome, default configuration if any AFAIK. I almost never get any ads at Youtube. Occasionally I'm offered a IIRC 1 week free trial of Youtube for $$$ and always decline. I have no idea what "benefit" paying for Youtube would amount to and haven't looked into it. I pay for almost nothing online, the one exception being NY Times at $20/month. Not sure I should keep that, but there's quite a bit of excellent content there. I avoid most of it, and gladly.

Its not just YouTube but every god damn news website. Someone provides a link to an article about climate change that I find interesting? I go to the website and I can only read a few lines before I'm told to disable my ad blocker. Many of the sites now are blocked via paywall as well. I've read that YouTube is cracking down on Adblock, but honestly I haven't had that issue yet. I have Adblock enabled on my laptop, and no issues accessing YouTube curently.

I do pay for YouTube Premium and I use that primarily on my phone. I was getting tired of the ads all the time. Back to back ads. An ad every few minutes. Especially when listening to music.
 
I have seen some longer ads, but they always have a "skip" option available after a few seconds, so not too worried about 15 minute infomercials.

The most annoying part of the ads is when they play randomly mid-video. Ads at the beginning are only mildly annoying.

If you pay for YouTube Premium, YouTube videos will be ad free if you are logged in on your computers.

Not only that, it APPEARS that paying for premium disables whatever software they're using to "crack down" on Adblock users because as mentioned I too pay for Premium and still have Adblock plus running in the background. Zero issues.

Any website that gives me crap about my ad-blocker which I wouldn't PAY to read by choice (ie: 95% of them!) I simply NEVER go back to for any reason. Easy-peasy.

I'd be a lot more excited about an ad-blocker for Android that ACTUALLY WORKS CONSISTENTLY without being data-pilfering malware that's potentially even worse than the ads at the same time!

Windows 10 Pro (for the moment) can still be locked down with the exception of the Bing/Edge related crap directly from M$ which is annoying enough as-is!

Throw adguard dns on it, works great. Caveat: it works better if you put it on the router above it (note: subject to being at home).

Also all Brave is, is one more "Chromium" based browser. Just like pretty much everything else mainstream besides Firefox.

Show me a browser that works better than Chrome (and I mean really!) and I'll try it.

Hasn't happened yet despite a lot of talk.... In fact Chrome works so seamlessly when set up thoughtfully (with authenticator app!) you almost forget Google is the evil empire ROTFL.

DNS66 is a separate program that uses the vpn slot on the phone to blackhole ad requests. Using the three programs/addons I mentioned has a lot of overlap, and something /may/ be able to be dropped. I haven't felt like fooling with it cause it hasn't caused me problems, and I've never seen an ad on android. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, or something like that.

I see very few myself because any app I like enough to use I spring for the "Pro/Premium" (read: no/few ads) version.

They're there though!

How's the speed?

Some people I know were talking smack about how much faster/better/smarter their <insert DNS of choice> was than the "crappy" Xfinity/Comcast default I was using SOOOO I decided to compare again since to be fair it's been a couple years.

Believe it or not Xfinity wins YET AGAIN no matter how much we hate them. The only ones that came close were Google and good old Open DNS. (this is using 100% my own equipment including modem not Comcast's... modem is DOCSIS 3.0 8/24 but internet is only 400mbs down making that a a non-issue since limit is just under 1GB)

The speed of the DNS? It's fine/normal/expected for DNS. Not a lot to go wrong with that. Anyone telling you their DNS is faster is stupid.

Android itself seems to trip over itself with third party DNS configured within the OS. It does fine if it's using a DNS provided locally and *that* returns junk for ad A records. Idk why, but it hung all the time when I had it configured on the phone itself.
 
Youtube recently complained about my adblocker and requested I turn it off (or they wouldn't let me use the site). I didn't actually realise I was blocking ads on YouTube, but I guess I was, as once I turned adblock off I started seeing them and recalled I used to get them at some point in the distant past but at some intervening time stopped seeing them (presumably it was when I installed or updated the adblocking plugin, though that probably happened at a time when I wasn't much of a user of YT so didn't notice it was also blocking YT video ads).

I assume YT recently decided to crack down and stop people using adblockers. Bit annoying as I'd gotten used to not having the ads, while not realising I was actually blocking them. But it's just the way the world is, I guess. Nothing is for free.

Believe me depending on where you are your DNS choice in Windows *(or in the router itself) CAN bog things down getting results back to you. (and somtimes limit the results you see)

My "seat of the pants" testing of multiple DNS's several years ago lead me to conclude that "default" in my case actually worked best that's all. YMMV.

It's a definitate first-world problem though no doubt about that and differences are small.

I mean, every DNS query should have a <20ms or so response time. If you can't match quad 8 or opendns 95% of the time, you're not trying very hard and probably shouldn't be used.

I don't know what you want out of a browser anyways. What is so good about Crome that is not in any of the Chromium based browsers, other than the extensive tracking that is.

I watch YouTube on Brave with no ads. On phone and desktop.
