(scroll down for cliffs if you don't feel like reading a huge wall of text)
Every computer i've owned has been thrown together from some junk I had laying around at work. There have been some cool systems (dual P3 server boards, high end video editing station from the early 00's etc) but for the most part they weren't comparably powerful with modern systems of the time.
Now that i'm graduated and working enough hours to afford a higher end system I think it would be a good time to actually build myself a new computer for once instead of just rebuilding old junk every 3 months.
I will be buying this computer within canada, although I would consider ordering a few used parts from the US depending on what I need. Upgradability is very important to me since i'll most likely be building a more basic system to start with and adding components as I go along. I don't do any gaming at all. Thats what the xbox is for. I DO do a lot of heavy photo and video editing and I can easily see myself spending a lot more time with the adobe creative suite. Once I get rid of my laptop it's going to have to run traktor + my midi controllers until I get myself a dedicated computer for that purpose.
CLIFFS:
need a computer for heavy multimedia use, want it to be upgradeable for some time to come and due to financial constraints i'm going to have to build the computer in stages. Prices in canadian dollars.
These parts are listed in the order I will probably buy them.
First stage: (everything I need to get it running)
Case: antec three hundred (already have this)
PSU: PC power and cooling silencer 620 (110$)
HDD: Samsung spinpoint F1 1TB (130$)
GFX: Radeon HD 4670? I'm not 100% sure on this one. I want HDCP and something decent for photoshop CS4 and any basic 3d I might need but I doubt I need anything high end. Best bang for the buck is what i'm after with this one.
Mobo:Gigabyte Ex58-UD5 (370$)
CPU: core i7 920 (390$)
Ram: Gskill 3x2gb ddr3 1600 (296$)
I have about 700$ to put towards this right now, I think I will probably buy the PSU, HDD and GFX card and then wait until I can buy the mobo, cpu and ram all at once. Prices can only go down from here, right?
Second stage: (these are just individual components i'd like to add in the future when I have cash for them, again in the order i'll most likely purchase them)
Thermalright 120 extreme + 120mm fan. (80$) at this point I can hopefully push a decent clock.
acer 22" LCD (300$ or so)
Logitech dinovo edge (190$)
MX revolution mouse (112$)
Intel SSD. Maybe i'm dreaming, but if these things hit the 500$ price point i'll the first in line to put my order in
anyway that about raps it up for now, i've got to go run some errands. Please share any criticisms you've got before I start pulling the trigger.
