I do pretty much the same and 24/7 on call. I carry a pager EVERYWHERE I go. I even sleep with it next to my pillow. I am married to this pager for gods sake! I only imagine a few professions who do carry pagers, which are doctors and lawyers, but being the system manager we don't get nearly the same pay.

Sorry but when you said "no more help desk, or ID10T questions" made me think you worked at some helpdesk as a phone boy and the whole "i dont know anything but I got the job just cause i know a distro or two" lead me to believe you have almost no IT Management experience 🙂

As I said..it wasn't anything towards you...just the way you made it sound. Sounded like they didn't have a clue what they were doing.

EDIT: Also not doing your due diligence and knowing exactly what duties and skills are required is odd. I know If I walked into a job I?d ask a ton of questions.
