your wishlist for superfetch-readyboost controls/tweaks

in the future msft is supposed to let users customize superfetch behavior.

what sort of controls would you want?

vista creates a list of programs to cache based on frequency. this list also changes with time of day.

i wish you could manage the list manually.

the problem is that there's constant hdd trashing. since vista leaves almost 0mb free, if a program needs more memory the superfetch cache has to be flushed out, then when you end that program the superfetch cache has to be refilled.

i'd rather just manually set the programs i'd like to have precached and leave a bit more ram free to avoid the constant hdd activity

Only the latter causes any disk I/O so there shouldn't be constant thrashing.

If Vista only recognizes up to 3GB or so.. would a system with that amount be optimal? Or would readyboost still be benificial?

😕

I'd like to be able to manage whats being cached. Id like to know what its going to load, and when its going to load it. I'd like to be able to set it up myself. For instance, tell it which apps I want to always be preloaded if possible. And then tell it to preload a certain game etc.

Superfetch analyzes the application that run frequently and the usage pattern- like startup programs for example. There is no question of customizing whats being pre-cached. If you run a heavy game frequently- Windows Vista does not pre-load that game because it is brainy and only prioritizes the applications that needs to be superfetched- it also records the amount of average time you spend on each application. It works even better if you connect your USB Thumbdrive and enable Readyboost- Windows moves the super fetch cache to the thumbdrive- so that all the caching is done in the USB drive- at the same time ready boost is all about Low Priority IO Requests(less CPU and HDD Intensive) that are cached and swapfile has got nothing to do with it. And Superfetch doesn't run all the time- its just a memory scheduler.
