Does anyone here think that playing violent video games at a young age influences children to do violent acts, or is it the fault of the parents for not telling their kids that it isnt real?
My friend is asking for opinions on this subject.
His exact question is

Do violent video games influence 5-13 year olds and is it ok for kids to play as often as they do now?

thanks guys, just opinions and any facts/links would be cool, I think he is trying to prove a point to someone.

EDIT: Not just viloent video games
and do you think anythign good could come form playing games alot?

Video games make kids idiots and encourage them to be fat, anti-social creeps.... so in that respect they are destructive.
I don't really think they make people violent... I'd blame that more on direct environmental influences than movies/video games.

how do they make kids idiots? please explain, and i know lots of gamers that arent fat, and are popular, wouldnt multiplayer gaming encourage people to be social

Tell your kids its not real, and you can't do those things in real life. Don't let kids play violent games when they are too young for them. Parents have to take responsibility for what they let their kids do, and that's not only reactionary. Parents need to talk to their kids about what is going on in those games, and teach them the difference between the real world and games.

Seriously, my parents didn't really have to worry about this, since I loved sports games while I was growing up. I knew that I couldn't check anyone through a wall or pass the ball 60 some yards. Once I started getting into FPS and RPG I knew that it was just a game, and none if it needed to carry over into my own actions.

Would any of you guys have problems if your kids were playing games where the purpose of the game was to molest and rape women and children? If not, why not? It's ONLY A GAME.

I started playing Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, Samurai Showdown, etc. at arcades when I was ~10. I suppose they can be considered violent (?).

My parents told me nothing, however I'm fairly certain I haven't killed anyone yet.

If my kids WANTED to play a game where they molested women and children I'd smack them.

playing games a lot could be a problem. but i turned out ok...
but i do know a kid who sat at home until he was 26 and his girlfriend forced him out and forced him to get a job. otherwise he would have just played video games all day. so far he has a job but its only for a few months and then its back to him sitting around playing video games.

People love to say that games don't have any negative effect, because they like games and they don't want to admit it. They do have negative effects, however, humans are quite warped already, so I really couldn't care less. With all of the fvcked up things that happen in this world, video games should be the least of our concerns. But really, none of the other fvcked up stuff will ever go away. It's just human nature, or just nature itself.

This is what's called anecdotal evidence. It is largely worthless.

I think it depends on the situation. many times kids that play lots of video games all day long do it because their parents pay little attention to them, so thats all they can do. In other cases, they may play it casually from time to time.

I think lack of guidance from parents is one and when they can't turn to parents, they will only see video games and television for the most part.

I'm not saying it will cause them to do something, but I'm saying that it all arises from treatment by the parents. I like playing all types of video games, but there is definetley a fine line between reality and the gaming world in my mind.

WTF kind of point are you trying to make? If you enjoy dreaming about molesting women and children go ahead...

They're called "societal norms." Our society has decided that simulating murder is cool/okay/etc. Sexual molestation is much more taboo.

And yet dreaming of killing people senselessly is alright? That stealing cars, hitting pedestrians, shooting cops in GTA is ok?

Why should it matter? There are movies with these subjects and they're considered 'artful'. Sleepers and Lolita comes to mind.

Um, it shouldn't matter. But humans are irrational. You didn't already realize that?

I think there's less of a jump between fantasy and reality when you're talking about molesting women and children than there is for shooting cops.

Still, japanese anime/manga has featured fairly violent expressions of sexuality and I'm not aware of any incredible record setting incidents of violent sexual crimes in japan.

Hey, dont' generalize everybody just because you're irrational.

Again i ask you, why wouldn't you want your kid to play games like those, but allow violent games? You're just dodging the question.

Why's that? Why is there less of a jump? You're only guessing or trying to justify what you do, but you're not answering anything with anything intellectual.

I guess you've never seen the statistics or even the Japanese culture then. Women are very degraded, and there are obscene level of 'sexual' crimes in subways and such with men that gropes, etc. Of course not everything gets reported, since there's even a greater lost of face in those countries than it is in the western world.
