Growing up recording music on tape from the radio I have no ethical problem with downloading a tune. It is a great way to preview and has led to me buying cds I wouldn't have otherwise. I avoid DRM controlled music because all it does is restrict usability. DRM adds no benefit to the consumer.

exactly. I always used to record music on tapes, and no one ever said anything about it.

I don't try to pretend it's not a moral grey area, but people equating it with stealing are taking it too far. How is it "theft" if the original owner still has the product? Also, a lot of my music ISN'T the mainstream American stuff, so it's not like I could get the CDs here anyway. And I wouldn't buy the CDs I could get at $20 a pop, so basically they're not losing any money when I download...they're just not gaining any.

So if I took $20 out of your paycheck before you got it you wouldn't be losing any just not gaining any. 🙂

If you can't afford the music, you don't need it. Listening to music isn't a constitutional right last time I checked, and although I DEFINITELY don't agree with what the RIAA does or thinks, downloading music without paying for it is still IP theft.

im for it, the ones you can download legally suck, i want to be able to get it at 320 Kbps, and DRM is horrible, it installs usless stuff for the consumer and as already said, doesn't benefit them

if i like a lot of songs i wont be cheap and i'll go out and buy the album

and places like tower records have HORRIBLE samples that are grainy, choppy, and too short

what is costing the record companies more money really?, a few lost CD sales, or the court and lawyer fee's, along with the development of all the DRM software and people they pay to spy on others?

but some people will download all they want and not give a dime back no matter how much money they have to spare, i think that is one of the main reasons it's so cut throat when going after people

if i didnt download, i would never have even heard of many bands like Waking Ashland, Chevelle, 30 Seconds to Mars, MF Doom, etc i would have never gone to their concerts

Not a valid example. If you hadn't been around, I would have gotten my $20. It's as if I could pay $20 in taxes, or you could take it out of my paycheck. Either way I'm not seeing the money.

Mind you, that's ME. I'm too cheap to buy CDs. If downloading wasn't an option, I would just listen to internet radio.

how else am I going to really preview the album? 30 second clips are worthless most of the time. If I like it, I'll buy it. Quite a few artists I have stumbled upon. I love the artist that have FLAC available to buy. It's the same price as the CD, so I just got the CD... but it's nice to see it out there sometimes (see, if apple's pricing was for FLAC, or at least apple lossless, I would be a huge itunes promoter).

my view:

in a truely capitalistic society one should take every advantage one should come across to procure their happiness. if this happiness involves not spending X amount of money for their media then that's what they should obtain. it's the govt's dilema on how they should counter this action. if they choose to cut off my ability to procure "free music" then it certainly is there right and, being an obedient and loyal citizen, will seek other measures whether it be subverting the law or complying, that's my perogative.
