Your view on my temps - first OC

SETUP
- 650i mobo with Scythe Ninja Plus Rev B, and nice copper NB/SB heatpipe cooling. Not currently using optional NB fan (its way loud)
- Antec P180B, upper HDD cage removed, 2 stock 120mm Tri-Cool case fans in upper chamber, 1 120mm Tri-Cool fan in lower chamber. Fans set to "Medium".
- Overclocked E6300 to 2.66gHz (380FSB), slight (.05v) NB voltage bump up to 1.35v (still well within safe values)
- OCZ Platinum Rev 2 DDR2 800RAM running 1:1 @380(2T = 760mHz), 2.0v, 4-4-4-15 (advertised timings)

TEMPS IDLE
CoreTemp - 38-40c
TAT - 36-38c
Speedfan - 21-23c

TEMPS FULL ORTHOS LOAD
CoreTemp - 58-60c (hits 60 on tests 4 & 8)
TAT - 56-58c
Speedfan - 36-38

Notes - I sure wish Speedfan were correct:laugh:. RAM voltage set to "Auto" - I certainly think I can drop that to 1.9, given that this RAM is advertised for 1.9-2.1 range. So I guess that could help a little? I'm a little disappointed in the Ninja's performance, but perhaps it should be reseated. Makes me wonder if I put the fan on properly, ie, blowing the right direction:roll:. First build. First OC.

Seems fine to me. I run a fanless Ninja at 42-55c. I can't run it fanless under orthos but in normal use it works perfectly. You will undoubtedly get people telling you that this is too hot because theirs runs at 25C idle.

Remember that most people here probably "adjust" their temps down a bit when they talk about them. You also need to watch out for people quoting 26C idle temps in a 24C ambient room...on air. 😕

roflrofl... i was actually going to say its running a little hot because of such a small Vcore increase.

However, can you tell me your revision coretemp says? if its a B, then those seem about right. B2 revsions tend to get a bit hotter then the others.

And no, usually people that brag about the mid 20's are guys running stock, or on water. If there on water, they wont be saying theres is the norm, and if there on stock, they dont know better.

But as the guy above me stated, if its a B it seems about right. If its not then, i think you need to play with your mounting a little bit more. At near stock voltage, you should be idling ~ lower 30's to upper 20's at ~ 63-66F ambients.

Most human homes are kept at temperatures between 72 and 78F (24-26C). Where do you get 63-66? My GF freaks out when it's below 75! Why not give the guy average temps that aren't on water and aren't at unreasonably low ambient temps? High 30s to low 40s idle is perfectly acceptable. Orthos temps of 58C are acceptable but warm.

Hey thanks guys, I appreciate both sets of feedback. I know I could also do a little better with cable management, although its not horrible. As for revision - yes, I think its a B, but I'll confirm tonight. Geez I should know that shouldn't I😱.

aigomorla - I may end up remounting the thing for my own sanity - just knowing I've got everything set up right.

Binky - I originally wanted to go fanless too, but then I wanted a nice OC, and, well, I didn't want to burn anything up. Do you hit 55 with gaming or video work? Just curious what sort of apps/activities put you up there. Moderate at best gamer here, but will be doing a lot of video work.

Hey, one other thing...are you guys aware of any external (5 1/4") drive bay filters or where to get them? You know, so in an empty bay I can put filters to get some air flowing through. Right now the bays are covered by those plastic cover thingies, blocking air intake. The ninja sists directly in line with the drive bays and would pull air straight in from any empty bays (only 1 occupied right now). I'll keep looking but if you know where to get them I'd love to know.

Thanks again guys.

I run the fanless Ninja on an E4300 at 2.9ghz right now in a Sonata case. The Ninja sits right next to the rear 120mm fan and just below the bottom mounted PS fan. The CPU actually seems to get plenty of airflow with the case fan as low as ~800rpm (and silent) for almost anything but gaming. When I play games, I kick up the speed of the rear fan a bit to keep the CPU below 55C. I haven't run orthos in this config because I really don't see the relevance of 100% load temps that I will never hold for more than a few seconds in real use. My room also runs warm, between 75 and 80F.

I'm experimenting with different homemade shrouds right now to route the air through the Ninja. So far it seems like a half shroud that goes under the rear fan up to about half of the ninja works the best. A full shroud that extended all the way to the end of two sides of the Ninja made it hotter. The full shroud also increased my VGA temps due to the path the air follows in this case.

I see your point about Orthos Binky.

Shrouds? That's beyond me at this point, although I did dremel my new case to improve cabling. That was fun.🙂

Looks like a revision L2 Model F CPU.

Idling at 36 in CoreTemp right now, so I'm feelin OK. I picked up another Tri-Cool fan to put in the upper chamber - just playin around. Not feeling too bad about this setup but will continue to tweak.

Heh, my "shroud" can also be called a bent piece of cardboard held in place with some tape and paper clips. Not pretty but I am still experimenting before I install something more permanent.
