I'm sure this has been done a million times on the forums but I figured I'd make my list and check yours as well. These are PC and console games mixed in.
My top 10 games:
10. Goldeneye 64 ? The first FPS I ever played at any length (sure I played Doom and Wolfenstein, but not much). Wonderfully designed (even if the textures were really bland) and it was fun to play! While the aiming was a bit rough everything else was great.
9. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast/Academy ? One of my most played multiplayer games ever. Every Star Wars geek?s dream, you make your own Jedi and duel! The biggest fault is that it might have been overly simple but that didn?t stop me from loving it.
8. Mario Kart 64 ? Quite possibly the best party game ever. Wonderfully simple racing at its best, and it was the kind of game that anyone, video game savvy or not, could enjoy.
7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ? Probably the best multiplayer FPS game I?ve played. After playing CoD 3 I wasn?t expecting much and it blew me away. Perks are a brilliant idea, fantastic fast paced action through the entire game, and even starting at level 1 in multiplayer I never felt horribly outgunned.
6. Lords of the Realm II ? A RTS mixed with a turn based strategy game that plays much more into economy and politics. An excellent strategy game and probably my first ever video game addiction.
5. Tekken 3/Tag ? The best fighting games ever. After Tag the series got WAY too technical.
4. Resident Evil 4 ? I HATE horror games but this one was so well designed and so much fun to play that I couldn?t put it down. The first over the shoulder TPS that I know of only sucked you more into the action. Played through the game 5 to 6 times.
3. Gears of War ? One of the games that didn?t blow my expectations away simply because my expectations were so high. It easily matched them though, fantastic graphics, great single player, fun multiplayer, still a favorite. A few weapon power balance issues IMHO (how many people actually use the hammerburst?) but easily looked past. Cover system is a great idea and was one of the few games I felt it worked correctly.
2. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault ? Possibly the only WWII game I?d consider to be great. The last of the dying run and gun genre with no aiming and no recoil to worry about. Fantastic SP and MP.
1. Diablo II ? The ultimate addiction. This to me is what WoW is to everyone else. My entire freshman/sophomore year of college was devoted to this game, which I?ve played for thousands and thousands of hours I?m sure. Fantastic story and game play make up for so-so graphics. This will never get old?ever.
Others I loved:
11. Unreal Tournament ? Had trouble deciding between Goldeneye and this as my #10 game. Went with Goldeneye as I think I enjoyed it a little more and I?d consider it more ?revolutionary? to the gaming world.
t12. Mario 64 ? One of the best platform games ever, the first ?3d? adventure game I got into.
t12. Zelda: A Link to the Past ? Probably put this as my favorite action adventure game ever.
14. Marvel vs. Capcom ? Mayhem in the form of a fighting game.
15. Final Fantasy VIII ? My favorite RPG game. Better story/fighting than FF7
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ? Another great action adventure/RPG.
-Super Smash Bros ? So far from the traditional fighter game yet a great party game.
-Metroid Prime ? Wonderfully designed FPS with unique gameplay and controls.
-Warcraft III ? My favorite pure RTS game. Heroes made this game stand out.
-Soldier of Fortune II ? Not well known or heavily played but I played lots of MP. Very realistic compared to the typical shooter out there.
-Prince of Persia: Sands of Time ? Wasn?t expecting this game to be so great. Combat was overly simple but story and gameplay made up for it.
-SSX3 - Not huge into sports games but I thought SSX3 was fantastic. Love the huge amount of moves that you could mix and match and the fact that you could board from the top of the mountain to the bottom seamlessly.
-America?s Army ? The best free game you?ll ever find.
-Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne - Fantastic graphics for it's time and great slow-mo combat.
-Powerstone ? I only got to play this once or twice, wish I?d had more time. I love the 4 player open ended combat.
-Soul Calibur ? Tekken with weapons?sorta. Not quite as enjoyable and ?masterable? as Tekken was but great nonetheless.
-Counter Strike/Source ? Probably not ranked as high as it would be for most people. I played it a lot but really it wasn?t all that mind boggling. Didn?t bring anything new to the table other than having to purchase your own equipment.
-Vagrant Story ? A unique combat system and fun story made this a great game.
-Gran Turismo ? The first true tuner game with lots of cars and lots of mods.
-Viewtiful Joe ? Another game made great by an interesting combat system.
Games that dissappointed me:
-Metroid Prime 2 ? Paled in comparison to the first.
-World of Warcraft ? I tried SO hard to like this game, it just didn?t do anything for me.
-Guild Wars ? Actually played this game for a while, although I think the title MMO is a bit of a stretch. Just not that great.
-Unreal Tournament 2003/4 ? Considering how much hype 2K4 got I was expecting an awe inspiring experience. I was sadly disappointed.
-Half Life ? A definite ?meh? for me.
-Prince of Persia: Warrior Within almost as bad as Sands of Time was good.
-Quake 3 ? I figure you have to like either Unreal Tournament or Quake 3, you can?t like both. I loved UT, just couldn?t get into Quake.
-Starcraft ? Not a bad game but just not up to par with the Warcraft series.
-Zelda: Windwaker ? Cell shading disappointment.
-Final Fantasy VII ? I?m sure I?ll take more flak for this than anything. I thought that FF8 was simply a better and more entertaining game. Iffy graphics, so-so combat, and a decentish story (Granted Materia was fantastic). Was a fun game, but greatly over-hyped.
-Halo (1/2/3) - Another game I could just never seem to get into. The story/combat/graphics just didn't do much for me.
