I just moved and to my luck there is no high speed service provider out here so I'm forced back to dial-up, and need to get a new modem.

So I'm wondering if anyone has ever used the SonicBlue-Diamond SupraMax V.92 USB modem. Any troubles with it and Win2K?

Or if anyone wants to suggest another modem be my guest, although I would like it to comply with the V.92 spec.

Thanks!

Just from reading various forums, I would stay away from all USB modems.
Many have installation and performance problems. Also you're basically
getting an external winmodem at an external hardware modem price.
If you need an external modem, make sure it's a hardware/serial modem.
Internal, I'd get a Lucent winmodem. Have one in my 2nd PC and get
excellent performance.........Greg

I've used their internal modems for years without problems. Don't know about their USB flavor. Keep in mind that very few ISP's support the v.92 protocol.

Thanks guys, I'd like to go external since I only have 1 PCI slot left that is free. But my ISP (Telus at moment) does support V.92. Perhaps I'll just get the SupraMax Internal, I'm not sure if it's controllerless or not, but it's internal...

Maybe I should just splurg and get Satellite broadband. :D

I'd ask my ISP which modems they recommend. BTW, I just got another
Lucent modem for backup last week and it supports V92..............
Got it at www.800pc.com.........$18.50 delivered........Greg

I work at a rather large ISP - 100,000+ customers....

I'd say BY FAR, the modems with the least problems are US Robotics. We use all external USRs at work. I'm using drivers that are 4 years old with that thing and have not been disconnected once in 4 months - and I stay connected for 12 hours at a shot.

The modems we have the MOST problems with are PCTel and Conexant, and a little bit less frequently, Lucent Winmodems... These modems are very sensitive to having up-to-date drivers or they start to act flaky and connect slowly, disconnect randomly, etc.

I'm on broadband, but if I had to go 56k, I'd personally splurge on the USR just because I know they're rock solid, and worth the extra bucks for the lack of hassles you'll have down the road.

Yeah, man... love the USR externals. Picked up a used V.Everything from Ebay two years ago, and it's performed like a champ through many different OS's, long connections, huge downloads, etc. If you've got to buy an external, do yourself a favor...
