This machine I built about 6 months ago for a friend. He says when he turns it on it makes a loud sound like maybe the PS fan is hitting on something. It goes away after about 5min.

Since the only moving parts are fans and the hard drives I guess that narrows it down.

I just wanted some feedback before I head over there. He says the sound is very noticable. Could a HD make that much noise if it was dying? Both drives are IBM, 10GB.

The case is an Aopen KF45A 300W.

I would check the heat sink fan first(if the heat sink has a fan). I had a very similar problem on a relatively new system about a month ago. I heard the same type of noise you're describing, but it wasn't continuous. It would stop and start at any time. I eventually took the case off and stopped the fan with my finger. It was deffinately the fan. Got a new one the next day, installed, and everything's smooth again.
