So I recieved an email today from my advisor that tells me I need to matriculate. I originally thought I wanted to be an EE or CE, but the more I think about it, the less enthusiastic I am about it.

I am now considering to be an Industial Engineer, but do not know much about it. Any IE's want to share what they do? or if you know an IE, do they seem happy with what they are doing?

Suggestions for other types of engineering degrees are welcomed.

You engineer the method, not the product...

In other words, you determine a method to make the product. that is what it is in the simplist form.

IEOR - Imaginary Engineering /Organized Recreation. At least that was what they were known as at my school. Yet I still majored in it...hmm... :p

EDIT: Not many IEs with only an undergrad degree stick with the field. I can't think of one from my graduating class that did, including myself. I tried my first two years out of college working for a small manufacturing company, but that didn't last. If you get advanced degrees in IE or OR however, it may be a different story.

I think calling Industrial Engineering "Imaginary Engineering" is universal.

Everyone's going to kill me, but I say major in a real (as in non-imaginary :)) engineering field such as mechanical, aerospace, chemical, electrical, or computer.

Here are some of the classes IEs take at my school: information engineering, manufacturing processes, and quality control. Yuck... if you think you might like that, then go for it. All the IEs at the company I work for pretty much just to factory and manufacturing management.

Have you taken any physics classes left? What parts of it did you like the most - electromagnetics, thermodynamics, dynamics (forces, moving objects, etc)?

One guy I know that majored in IE is going to get a job right out of college with the DoD starting at $55,000/year. My other IE friend is more than likely going to get into the IE-MBA program.

IE is pretty much about making processes more efficient. It's definitely more business oriented.

There's always Civil Engineering if designing roadways and sewage pipes interests you. ;)

I am in Physics 205 right now and all we pretty much have done is the momentum principle and energy principle. Nothing that really pertains to a specific field.
