your thoughts on a 2003 hyundai sonata

the AC has died on my 98 civic DX with 150,000 miles. it's been time for a new car for a about 6 months anyways. (compressor is frozen up)
it's august...in florida. AC is needed

a local dealership has this 2003 sonata base model with V6 automatic, only 24000 miles.

seems like an OK deal. my girlfriend saw it yesterday. i'm going to drive up and check it out today.

I'm hoping to get about $1000 trade in for my civic, maybe get them down to $8000 out the door.

Will the warranty transfer? the 10yr/100,000 miles power train one?

I drive quite a bit, and really like the 30MPG my civic gets. it looks like I'll be down to about 20MPG with this. 🙁

anyone have another recommendation? I want something a little bigger than my civic with good gas mileage. I've been looking for accord, camry and sonata's

For that kind of money, treat yourself to a new car!!!!

The warranty wouldn't transfer in the used Sonata unless you're family. (Gets reduced to 5/60, I think and you're already past the 5 part)

I'd walk into the Hyundai dealership and ask them how cheaply they're willing to let an elantra go for.

that is too much money for a 5 year old hyundai. the new ones are worth more but the older vehicles are not. You could buy a new vehicle for a few thousand more than that.

03 Sonata is, well, crap. Sonata was dramatically improved in 2006 MY. Before that, it was just one cheap POS car, without much improvement from 1998 to 2005. So, even if you are buying 2003 model, you are buying pretty identical crappy 1998 Sonata with revised look and a little bit squeezed engine, but no significant improvement on reliability or quality. Think that way.

Anyway, unless you can drop the price more, look into other cars.

What everydae said. A few years backI got a used early Elantra for one of my kids. Hands down the worst POS I ever saw. The only car I ever saw where every component wore out at almost the same time. The new ones are supposed to have improved dramatically, but stay far, far away from the old ones.

I remember when I destroyed one of these on the highway.. from a red light. good times

I was on my mtn bike.

I passed on it. It rode REALLY well. acceleration wasn't too great. it revved high before shifting.
I liked the interior. not bad not great but OK.
it was a smokers car...it really had a strong smoke smell. Main thing I disliked.

still looking.
