Classical music is ethereal. There is simply nothing more beautiful to the ears.
Not convinced? Listen to...
Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (preferably w/ Emma Kirkby (she's an angel)) and Christopher Hogwood directing
ANYTHING w/ Christopher Hogwood directing
Largely, anything produced by the Academy of Ancient Music
specifics:
Bach:
St. Matthew's Passion (w/ James Bowman if you're lucky)
St. John's Passion
All of the Orchestral Suites (again, Christopher Hogwood and company... absolutely fabulous)
All of the cello suites (there's a production w/ Yo-Yo Ma. There difference w/ Yo-Yo playing the suites is incredible.)
Mozart:
Requiem! Find one w/ Emma Kirkby, you won't be disappointed.
20th Piano Concerto.
Beethoven:
All of his piano sonatas (8 (Pathetique) is especially beautiful)
The Emperor Concerto
4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th symphonies are my favorite. If you get a good production of his 5th, second movement, ~3 minutes into the piece.... WOW. I get chills...
Vivaldi:
Four Seasons, of course. Get a production w/ Itzhak Perlman.
Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera (Can't think of a specific soprano, but if you find a good one, wow)
Any of his other various concertos. Vivaldi's music is quite distinctive.
Of course that's a horribly short list for anyone to truly appreciate the music, but it's what I've been listening to this week. If you do start to listen to classical music (or play it), you'll wonder how you ever listened to anything else. Nothing compares, imo.
[edit]I'll note that I've waited 4 months for a production to be shipped from the UK of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater w/ Christopher Hogwood directing, Emma Kirkby soprano, and James Bowman countertenor. This music is simply incredible. I can probably put up an mp3 of the first movement if anyone is particularly interested.[/edit]
