Curious to see what others think about it. Something other then is sucks/rocks/etc. (Give a reason why)

I find it interesting that this music is still around after centuries have passed.

I like a lot of it. There is a lot of variety so it is no wonder it has stayed sround for centuries.

I think its amazing stuff, because the level of thought and complexity involved is so much greater than 99% of modern music. Unfortunately most people dont want to think, which makes classical music popular with a somewhat restricted group of people, i.e. people who have a lot of mental discipline, and actually appreciate the challenge it gives.

I only wish I was familiar with more, but I havent had someone to guide me in developing a taste for it. Anybody wanna make any recommendations?

I've actually bought a classical CD even though I grew up in the dance/techno age. Sure its been around a long time, but that's only because there was nothing else to listen to. I'm sure there were some really bad composers, just like there are some really bad artists now.

A couple of times I've put on a classical station on while driving, but my girlfriend always changes it and says, "...that sucks." Then she puts on rap which I can't stand! :disgust:

it Rocks!

But seriously. I do like it a lot. I like how it can express a whole range of emotion the music so very well. Better than most other types of music IMO.

I like classical music. Its beautiful music actually. I have several tapes of classical music. I listen to it on the radio as well. I find it calming as well as it allows me to clear my thoughts. Classical music is good stuff.

Classical music is ethereal. There is simply nothing more beautiful to the ears.

Not convinced? Listen to...

Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (preferably w/ Emma Kirkby (she's an angel)) and Christopher Hogwood directing
ANYTHING w/ Christopher Hogwood directing
Largely, anything produced by the Academy of Ancient Music

specifics:
Bach:
St. Matthew's Passion (w/ James Bowman if you're lucky)
St. John's Passion
All of the Orchestral Suites (again, Christopher Hogwood and company... absolutely fabulous)
All of the cello suites (there's a production w/ Yo-Yo Ma. There difference w/ Yo-Yo playing the suites is incredible.)

Mozart:
Requiem! Find one w/ Emma Kirkby, you won't be disappointed.
20th Piano Concerto.

Beethoven:
All of his piano sonatas (8 (Pathetique) is especially beautiful)
The Emperor Concerto
4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th symphonies are my favorite. If you get a good production of his 5th, second movement, ~3 minutes into the piece.... WOW. I get chills...

Vivaldi:
Four Seasons, of course. Get a production w/ Itzhak Perlman.
Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera (Can't think of a specific soprano, but if you find a good one, wow)
Any of his other various concertos. Vivaldi's music is quite distinctive.

Of course that's a horribly short list for anyone to truly appreciate the music, but it's what I've been listening to this week. If you do start to listen to classical music (or play it), you'll wonder how you ever listened to anything else. Nothing compares, imo.

[edit]I'll note that I've waited 4 months for a production to be shipped from the UK of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater w/ Christopher Hogwood directing, Emma Kirkby soprano, and James Bowman countertenor. This music is simply incredible. I can probably put up an mp3 of the first movement if anyone is particularly interested.[/edit]

The most moving piano piece I've heard is by F. Chopin -- Études (Opus 10, No. 3). This MIDI file doesn't do the song justice, though...

I love Mozart, Beethoven, and Edvard Grieg, as well.

Great stuff to chill and fall asleep to.
Its time tested and will be around for all of human history.

Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Tschaikovsky, Bach, Brahms, Grieg... There are lots of great composers. I learned to really appreciate classical music. I played violin for several years as a teenager. I skipped the crappy school orchestra and played with the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies (Twin Cities being Mpls/StPaul for those that don't know) which brought a lot of very talented kids together.

I really like classical music. It's pretty much all I listen to. My favorite is the Brandenburg Concerto #5 by Bach.

I too am a fan of the Baroque period, particularly Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoni et al. This thread actually puts me in the mood to listen to some of my classical CDs. Aaaah...Jeremiah Clarke's "Trumpet Voluntary" Lovely.

It actually is kind of funny how many different classical pieces people would know, but not realize. They are very often used in commercials, movies, television themes, etc.

I agree with Jothaxe. The complexity that goes into composing a classical piece, or the effort required to understand how each note of each part fit together, is tremendous. I'm not a very big fan of classical music, but I do respect it a lot. Most of the modern genre of music have some sort of connection to classical music.

Classical music is just amazing, There is just so much emotion in the music but it is so well mixed with the technical side that they blend together perfectly, you can sit down and listen to a symphony for its technical attributes, or you can sit down an just take in the emotions that are evoked from it. Or you can do both, but in any case it just totally engulfing.

I think you mean Sonatas, not Concertos. :) Regardless, I totally agree with most of the stuff you listed. The Pathétique Sonata is possibly my favorite piece of music... it's rather simple, but absolutely gorgeous.

Indeed, I meant sonata :)

One of the ostensibly simplest piano sonatas by Beethoven is his Moonlight Sonata (#14). It takes more concentration for me to play the 14th than it does the 8th.

I was particularly moved by Gary Oldman in Immortal Beloved when he began to play the Moonlight on the new piano, and he had his head on the key cover.
