Your social security number? Do you give it out ?

Last week I was renting some yard equipment that really wasn't even expensive and they said that they wouldn't rent me anything unless I gave the my SS#. They said it was there policy and everybody had to give it to them in order to rent stuff. I did give it to them, well maybe not the exact number..hehe

And then today, I was at my city library and I noticed a stack of applications there for Library cards and there was a place where your SS# had to be written in. Now I already got my card like 15 years ago and back then they didn't request my number and I thought that was kind of unusal that they needed it.

I always thought that this number was just needed for your employer's so they can match your social security and of course the IRS and maybe other places like your bank and so on for tax purposes. Am I wrong?

I give it out when I'm asked for it. I think people are too paranoid about their SS#.

It's my college ID.

I have given up on keeping big brother away. I am just waiting on the application to be assimilated.

You have no need for it.

But like I work at CC, and when people apply for our credit card they grumble about giving us their SS#. What the hell do they think we are going to do with it? It sure is horrible for their SS# to sit in a locked cabinet in our cash office, which is always locked

Tell that to the people who have had their identities stolen.

And no, I do not give it out unless necessary such as job requirements, credit or governmental requirements. I would take my business elsewhere, otherwise.

Its nobodys fricken business what my SSN number is. Yes Iam uptight about giving it out.

by Federal law your SSN Number was never ment to be a national serial number for your Identity. But it has turned into it. Too much info is linked to peoples SSN and the less people who i give it out too the better.

Is it just me, or does college make you give out your SS# like it's candy?

I get a list of all my students' SSes each semester :Q Of course, our dimwitted lawmakers just got around to making it not mandatory to have it on your driver's license as well

ARGH! Yuo have to give it to them like every friggin day! You KNOW they have all your info in a database somewhere and they can EASILY look up your SSN based on a zillion other pieces of info about you, yet they CONTINUE to ask for it! WTF!

I am a victim of identity theft by a person that has the same name as I do. In fact, my drivers license was suspended because his was supposed to. I ended up at the DA's office clearing it up and got a letter of apology from them for my employer, as a paramedic. It probably helped that I was a manager with the sheriff's dept. search and rescue team.

Keep your SSN to yourself, it can cause trouble. I even shred all my junk credit card junk mail now.

Sure!

My name is Alan G. Otero

SSN: 587-89-3428

Discover: 6011 4735 8975 2239 Exp. 12/4

Visa: 4621 9204 9482 8487 Exp. 05/05

Oh! And the Visa code on the back is 032.

It's no big deal to put this info out there. It's not like there's people that are mean or corupt enough to take advantage of me. Plus everyone here is so nice. So there is 0 danger.

I am really not trying to be a smartass, but how could someone actually do that?
I have read about identity theft, but I really don't know exactly how it works.
