I tend to shift at 3k in every gear.

1st to 3k (to 2100)
2nd from 2100 to 3k (to 2200, etc.)
3rd from 2200 to 3k
4th from 2500 to 3k
5th from 2750

I wish 1st wasn't geared so damn tall, takes forever to rev match since my clutch is pretty much on-off.

floor it until the rev limiter kicks in, repeat until out of gears/road.

The worst thing I have done (to date) is trying to shift my 5-Speed into 6th while doing 65MPH. I had been driving my wife's 6-Speed for a couple weeks and didn't pay attention in my own car.

My cheap ass Ranger doesn't have a tach. I do it by feel/sound, but it all depends how fast I 'm trying to accelerate.

i would guess my "normal" driving would be like this but it really depends on how i feel. sometimes when i'm real lazy, i just stay in 2nd from start to 50 (doesn't happen too often).

normal days.....first i usualy go up to around 4-5k, second, 3-4, same for third, im up to highway speeds and i shift to fifth.(tach is dead center and larger than speedo) on a day im driving hard, i usually shift just after 7...by then my car is buzzing at me too.(sig) now, for downshifting to turn off of a highway, i practice heel-toe down shifting....that makes for some entertainment.(and when i got the green light to turn while im heading up to the turn...people look at you thinking whats wrong with your car)

Sounds like a CRX I used to drive. Rubber in third? Check! :)

To the OP: This should be different for every car, in every condition, for every specific need/want, for every run through the gears. There is no end-all, be-all "proper" shift point.

You'll note that I didn't ask for the right shift point.

1st: 12k
2nd: 12k
6th :)

It helps that Im on a bike with a redline of 18.5k and that can do 100 easily in 2nd so I really dont need 3rd 4th or 5th unless I'm really playing :D

His transmission would be all over the road if he actually managed to engage reverse. ;)

It probably just growled angrily at him.

yeah, it was just a grind and the shifter kinda jolted out of my hand. That was my 95 Maxima SE and it ran flawlessly from 51 to 225K miles. The only major thing I ever replaced was the clutch at 175K. I eventually donated the car and it was still running strong.
