When to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 lat night, the imax ticket was $15, popcorn was $9 and a soda filled mostly with ice was $5.

While the movie was enjoyable, the seats were not, teenagers texting and taking selfies was equally annoying. Person next to me probably hasn't taken a bath in a while, he smelled like sour pickles.

My movie experience would rate a 4 out of 10.

I don't like theatres. Factoring cost into everything else, the best I can hope for is 3/10 experience, but it isn't usually that good. I don't like paying to go to someone else's uncomfortable house, paying for food, and not being able to pause the movie.

I haven't been out to see a movie in over 10 years, and I'd be fine with never seeing another movie in a theatre.

One of the AMCs near me upgraded recently.

Instead of tearing everything out to install stadium seating, they put in fewer seats and installed pairs of arm chairs. Something like you'll find in home theaters. Fewer seats, but you can reserve your seats earlier. The seats are power reclining.

I like it. Saw Spider Man 2 in 3D recently. Was a 9/10 for my experience. Reducing a point for my own stupidity. Got a popcorn but no soda, and was thirsty by the end but didn't want to get up to get a drink.

i haven't gone to the theater since i finished my ht. the experience at home is simply better than going out to see a movie. i can make cocktails, recline in leather seats, and not pay more than $1.59 to redbox for my wife and i to watch a movie. i might go see godzilla in the theater though, looks awesome.

last movie in the theater was when iron man 3 was out.

Wow that's cheap. Popcorn at the regular theaters near me is over $18 alone, $12 per ticket and $7 for ice pop and heaven forbid if you want nacho's. I heard the Imax here is a lot more but never been. The problem here is there is no competition and they claim they don't make money off of movie sales so they mostly make it from popcorn sales and is why it's so high. I'm surprised anyone goes but theres always quite a few people, mostly college kids.

I'm not much of a movie or theater person so I don't really care but typically We just go to the local Drive in, only $10 to get in.

A friend of mine used to be a manager at a movie theatre. She gave me a stack of complementary tickets so I haven't paid to see a movie in a long time. :)
I've still got one left. They don't expire.

There's really not a lot of movies I want to see in the theatre anymore. Last one I saw was Gravity in IMAX. Got in for free (see above) and I think I paid $10 for snacks (drink and bag of reese's minis).

I actually enjoy going to the theatre. I rarely watch movies anyways, and definitely will not watch the same one more than once. So on the off chance I watch a movie I like to go to Tinseltown and see it on a big screen.

I hate theaters. They look like crap, they smell like crap, the floors are almost always sticky, the seats are either gross or just plain uncomfortable.
The staff is surly is not rude, the prices for everything are ridiculous, the parking usually sucks and people often scrape my car.
Everyone inside is an asshole, from screaming kids, to yelling teens, to shouting parents, and anyone can be an obnoxious talker or texter (age no longer makes a difference).

Nope, would rather sit at home with a pizza in my La-z-Boy and a pause button.

Price of going to a movie here just went up nearly 16%. It was $6 for 2 movies last year, this year, it's $7 for 2 movies. (Both new or close to releases; e.g., currently you can see Godzilla & Spiderman 2, else you can see The Other Woman & Neighbors.)

So, do the studios charge some theaters more to show the movies? Or are the theaters full of shit? Oh, and popcorn is $3 or $4, and drinks are sold in 20oz bottles; same price they are in any convenience store.

Don't go to movie theaters very often. IIRC, last time was a matinee to see Ironman 2 as I was waiting for tires to be put on my truck.
Expensive, dirty and full of no class, unkempt, mouth breathers.
I have a HT with a 60" plasma that I can pause when nature or alcohol calls.

The closest theater to me is brand new. It's really amazing and the people there, both working and watching, are typically very courteous and clean. If you go to the matinee the prices are outstanding (matinee at 4:30, $5 a ticket, drinks out of a touchscreen fountain with over 100 flavors-ice is optional-, and a yearly subscription popcorn bucket for $17.50 that you can refill for $3 at each visit). It even has Big3D if you want to go crazy, which includes leather reclining chairs. There is even an usher at the front door of the Big3D theater.

My theater gets an A+ for sure, but my 200" Benq w1070 projector makes it kind of redundant honestly...lol

A theater on the other side of town had an outbreak of bedbugs in their cloth seats. They had to close for days to sanitize. Another had a 'peeping Tom' that crawled from the mens room to the womens room and was peeping through a ceiling panel. Lets also not forget the person who brought in a rifle and started shooting people in the theater. Then there was the off duty police officer who shot someone for not turning off his phone quick enough or something. Yes, the theater - a great place to go.

I went to my local AMC theater to see Neighbors last weekend, they upgraded to the reclining 2-person seating about a year ago. Really enjoyable. We got seats kinda late, and it was opening night for the movie so we sat kinda close. But the reclining helped. Also put the center divider up, great for a date night.

I noticed no one ever wants to sit up front. I actually enjoy the screen in my eyeballs but the wife would never do it. I hate walking into a theater and seeing a bunch of people all scattered around with their own buffer zones forcing me to fight my way through to some oddly angled section of the row, I don't like it unless I'm dead center or it really bothers me. Or the worst when there are 2 seats left and neither is next to each other, only happened to me once and I asked for my money back and left.

Theaters are waaaay too loud for me. I want to have my hearing when I'm older.

Haven't been for at least a decade. Who needs 'em when you can rent a Blu-Ray for $4 for three days?

Not a big movie goer...last one I saw was Skyfall in non-3D IMAX. 9/10 for that, pretty clean theater and the crowd wasn't terrible.

I noticed no one ever wants to sit up front.

Depending on how old the theater is or how much of a crappy job they did with the layout, sitting up front will either be too close that you can't see the entire frame without moving your eyes/head, or you'll need to slouch or crane your neck up to see the screen. Being in the front row of a crappy theater with both issues playing Quantum of Solace and its ridiculous flash-frame editing gave me a cramped neck and a royal fucking headache.

What a theater pays for rental is variable based on a lot of factors but in general it is within a certain ballpark for all exhibitors. Big releases do typically command a higher rental figure though.

Weighted against inflation average cost to see a movie has actually fallen for quite some time.

Movie theaters are too expensive for me. The last movie I saw in theaters was Star Trek: Into the Darkness, and that's only because one of my parents invited me out and they paid :D

Personally, I have never had an issue with people being dicks in a theater, maybe I've just been lucky. I used to go to see a movie in the theater once every couple of weeks until I saw Watchmen in some new theater and (ignoring that the movie sucked and was a waste of money), the seats fucked my back up for a week. Since then, I can count on one hand how many times I've gone to the theater.

I talk about it a bit below, but the one closest to me is rather pricey overall, but that's partially because it's in a fancy-schmancy outdoor mall. However, I recently noticed that they've been (accidentally?) putting new movies in their Throwback Thursday campaign. I originally saw them release that promotion with older movies (I think I saw Top Gun as one of the movies). To give you an idea of the difference in pricing, I have a ticket for 22 Jump Street tonight in the "fancy section" for $8 at 7 PM. The normal price for that ticket is $14! D: One thing that amused me is that they would leave the normal ticket price in there as an option along with the much cheaper Throwback Thursday price. Yes, I would definitely like to pay $14 instead of $8 (or $9.50 instead of $6 for the normal section). :p

However, I think they caught on, because you can no longer buy cheap tickets for my showing (fancy or normal section tickets).

There's also a theater on the other side of town that has an IMAX, but since it's around 20-25 minutes away (depending on traffic), I don't go there often. The last movie I saw there was Gravity (IMAX) and Transformers 3 (IMAX) prior to that. I'm tempted to go see the latest Transformers movie in IMAX there as well!

When I went back home to southern-tier NY for Christmas a year or two ago, I decided to go to the theater after my mom kept telling me about their upgrades. They had some bad flood damage (they're in an awful spot for flooding), and they pretty much did what you described except for no seat reservations. Anyway, while the chairs weren't La-Z-Boys, they were definitely far and above better than what I've experienced before. The real kicker? $6 matinee! I pay around $7-$12 for matinee here, and the seats aren't nearly as nice. The higher priced ones just get you flat, leather seats that aren't even as good as Staples' cheapest office chairs, but you can buy alcohol to numb the pain to your wallet (a mixed drink is $10).

I took a quick picture of the theater in NY. It's crappy, but I didn't want to be that guy that takes random photos of theater seats :p If anyone is wondering, it isn't just power reclining, but there's also a foot rest that comes out as you recline! :awe:

The idea of getting head lice or ring worm from a seat always bothered me a lot. But I never thought about getting bed bugs from a seat, ugh.
