Hi
I built the system specs below some 2 years ago and never a problem until tonite.

A pillow fell down on top of the computer case all day while i was out and partially covered the airspace above the PWS vent. I didn't notice until i tried to run a proggie after i got home, got a black screen, waited, hit the reset button and after initial screen flicker from reset, nothing happened. I guess this is called a no-post?

I saw the pillow, removed it and it felt -very- warm. I opened up the case and turned it on again and the 4 diagnostic led's in the back were solid red all the time - it would not progress through the boot stages. I d/c the power supply cord from the computer, waited a sec, and plugged it back in. *the power supply did not whir up the computer for like 2 secs like it always does when it's re-plugged in.* while it was open i cleaned out the dust from the case and from around the cpu fan (chrome orb)

i waited like an hour with the side panel off and with a room fan on high to try and help it cool off, tried again, but same problem.

Is my cpu fried or my PWS? The PWS powers the 2 fans and the leds, I can hear the HD's whir up, too. But it does not show any bios info. Just a vacant screen on my monitor telling me it's not getting a signal.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

ps-the cpu was installed with the heatsink cream when put together in Dec 2000.

ok i pulled off the HSF and cpu and i looked at the board and found 2 or 3 spots where dust had formed cruddy circles over the elements on the board. i cleaned them off and i will put the hsf back on with some more compound. I cleaned off the surface of the HSf of the old stuff and im gonna try and see if there is a way to clean it off from the pcb of the chip from around chip. i dont want the goo to short anything else out either.

i will inspect the cpu for breakage or burn lines, too.

ok so there was an improvement and a setback =)
after re-installing the CPU, i plugged it in, and the LED's now had 1 green vs 0 before (out of 4). the led's indicated a memory botup problem. I flipped the switch on the PWS off, went and got my monitor, hooked it (so i could see if it was going through a memory test) and flipped the PWS back on and

nothing.

not a thing. Maybe it is a PWS problem after all. the investigation continues!

well after some digging, i found out that DEER pws are generally thought of as POS's (and their other brand L&C)

i'm mulling over ssending out a request from newegg for a new PWS. maybe BB carries some....

Yup, deer power supplies aren't very good. Sounds power related to me and that pillow may have overheated that powersupply.

thanx for reply.

i just put the new stock ATI LE in there for a 4 months ago, and it has never run for consecutive days. and for years before that, it only had a little matrox millenium2 4 meg pci card in it.

this time, it got the ATI + a pillow and ran for about 2-3 straight days.

the deer PWS came with the case which i got for $30 from a computer show when i was looking to build my own computer. i'll probably vent it with some drill holes while the PWS ships (which i have yet to order =)

im lookin at an ENERMAX for $33 off newegg right now, but i was told that these are just usually rebadged PWS from other manufacturers. Would you know who made the enermax pws's?

Sepcs:
ENERMAX EG301P-VB 300W Power supply for AMD K7 & Pentium4. Meet ATX 2.03 & ATX +12V 1.1 Version. Pentium 4 supported ! Compliant with AMD K7. Model #: EG301P-VB. OEM. Manufacturer 1 year limited warranty. Model#: EG301P-VB

ps - what exactly happens to a PWS when it over heats?

(I'm no electrical engineer =)

I ordered a 350 watt Enermax off of newegg. Rush that order!

As far as I know, enermax makes their own power supplies and I have never had a problem with them. I'm not real sure what happens when a power supply overheats either.
