From the days that ~$200 bucks can get a top of the line video to the introduction of the Geforce and Geforce 2 rised up to about $300, than the recent release of Geforce 3 at an average of $350+(except some vendor decide to sell it cheaper). The consumers had adapted these increases through time. I really worry about the introductory price of the NV25, despite the fact that is far away.
(I only mention Nvidia because they are the one in the lead, oblvious isn't it)

The V2 SLI setup ran $600 back when it was new. The GF DDR I bought when new ran $320, most GF2 GTSs were $350 when new and the V5 was $300.

With the exception of the V3/TNT2 generation of boards, the price has always been in the ~$300 and up price range for the latest and greatest:)

Actually I have to hand it to nVidia for releasing their new GF3 darling at a MSRP of $399 . The GPU has 57+million transistors. Quite a feat of engineering. You gotta pay to play....

when you factor in inflation as well, its not as much as we think...
Prices were even higher back then with the Voodoos and the stronger dollar and lower inflation.

Think it was a deliberate move on their part to initially list the retail price as $599 or whatever it was then lower it to $399 so it would seem drastically cheaper?

Smart move. Worked on me, bought one as soon as I saw that $319 deal.

What price increase? The price/performance ratios of video cards is increasing, especially in light of the recent price cuts.

Plus, don't forget inflation.
