So, at work here, I'm thinking of getting some dual core machines for the investment boys. These guys are running bloomberg, excel (loads of spreadsheets with streaming data), some old 16-bit trade application, amongst the usual junk like word, outlook and the like. Each machine has sophos with real-time scanning on the go.

They've had issues witht he 16bit app hogging resources, so I wasw thinking of instead of going to the 2.8GHz P4 with HT HP machines, that a dual core CPU might be worth it since they are running several apps simultaneously.

But are they using enough processing power for it to be justified?

I know this kind of isn't the right forum, but I believe there are dragons and other bizzare creatures of the night in the other ones.

Also, what's with these pentium 820 series? How do they compare to the AMDs?

What kind of app hoggin resources are you talking about, with the 16 bit apps?

IIRC: in the days of the 16 bit apps, everything used to be nicely streamlined.

I think it's great.

I do a bit of capturing on my PC, and dual core allows for me to capture video without either dropping frames or having to make sure that I don't touch my PC.

I run a complete trading platform with 5 LCD screens,Tradestation, Traderunner, as well as multiple spreadsheets, and a few other proprietary trading programs.

There is a noticeable difference. I went from a 3.4ghz HT to a 2.8ghz Dual core.

I use it for a trading platform as well and love the way my order processing software is executed seemlessly w/o getting delayed by the calculation and datafeed resources required by the trading software. Its made a big difference by having it this year.

If they ever come up with a multi-core cpu that can multithread non-multithreaded apps, I'll be all over it in a heartbeat.

There is some sort of issue with legacy console apps in Windows XP. I looked this up once because I noticed the same issue. Our DOS-based time tracking system was using up enormous amounts of CPU time for no apparent reason.
