A question for those of you who have experience with lots of different computer components :
It is time to do my first major upgrade of my faithful little Compaq. It came with a Quantum Fireball 6 gig Hard drive, which has run out of room. I found a possible HD - a Quantum 30G Fireball AS Drive, 30 GB EIDE ultra ATA 7200 rpm 8.5 ms - is this a decent, reliable drive? It supposedly has a new quiet drive technology in the motor and some other new stuff? The original 6gig has been good, but noisy. I simply need another secondary drive (Compaq configuration for this unit requires that I keep the 6gig as master) with more room. Would this be a reliable, fairly priced drive ($130)???

Quantums are OK and it seems decently priced. Just make sure
your Compaq BIOS can handle a drive that large.......
You don't want to use overlay software on a new HD!!!

It's a quiet hard drive, with decent performance. However, I would recommend the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 from Newegg.com, here.

And as GregMal says, make sure the Compaq supports large hard drives.

All Fireball Plus AS comes with Quiet Drive, but the acoustics is similar to other drives of this generation; however, some come with fluid bearings which are supposed to be quieter and more reliable. Or look at the new IBm 60GXP drives, check out the review in today's news on Anandtech

I have to Quantums in my System a 20G and 15G. I can hardly hear them and
they are real fast. Both are 7200rpm.

The Quantum AS is fast and very reliable but slightly louder then other high performance IDE drives. In my experience they also tend to take well to overclocked FSB speeds.

I say go with it.
The 60GXP or 75GXP from IBM is a faster more expensive but less reliable alternative as well.

Make sure the Compaq BIOS will accept larger HDD's.

How do I check to see if Compaq BIOS can handle a 30 GB second drive ? (The 'Quick Restore' cds are, of course, set to format the 6 GB drive into C and system save D, so the 2nd HD will have to be slave drive).
Greg - what do you mean overlay software?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks guys!
