Your opinion on DVD-Rom: Panasonic vs. Toshiba

I am trying to purchase a DVD-Rom drive and ad for
Panasonic SR-8586-B "Blue Streak" 16X DVD Rom Drive came to my InBox.

I have read in this forum that Toshiba and Panasonic DVD Rom are good, but I am not sure which model you mavens were particularly talking about.

The price for this particular model is $80 with software decoder. Made in Japan.

Let me hear your opinion please. 🙂

I want something solid and that would last sometime. I would not mind paying for a better quality DVD-Rom.

Thanks.

Hi Lavie. 🙂

I not sure about panasonic, but I know the toshiba drive I have has last my abuse for the last couple of years. Anyone else have more insight?

jonnyguru perhaps. 🙂

I would recommend the Pioneer DVD-115 (16x). I've got one in my new Athlon system and it has been working without a hitch from day one. It is also on the leaderboard at Storage Review, that review and the recommendations from others on this board drove my purchase.

i agree with Karl the pioneer 16x DVD is the way to go...i especially like the slot load...quality stuff!
hope i was a help
🙂

Get Pioneer Slot Loading 10X (104S) it's very quiet when reading/playing DVD movie, but it's quite loud (because it's fast) when it reads CDs.

If you are going to use it as a reader also for copying CD's to a CDRW drive, I would get the Toshiba SDM-1402. It is 12X DVD and 40X CD and will also read sub channel (copy protected) CD's. Excellent Drive.

I have been suffering with an I/0 Magic DVD for about a year (would misread some software and EVERY movie would stutter and jump in certain places). I have just replaced it with a Toshiba 1402 12x and it runs everything great...the movies run perfectly, even in places that stuttered with the I/0 Magic. I recommend the Toshiba (got it from Computers4sure$89 I believe).

I never really wanted the I/0 Magic in the first place but it was all I could find at the time...and I figured all DVD's were basically the same. WRONG!!

Overwhelming recommendation for Toshiba so far. 🙂

Anyone here used Panasonic?

What is speed difference (16 X vs 12x) makes in DVD Rom?

As you can tell I have never used a DVD Rom.

DVD player yes (one connected to the TV).

Don?t I need software?

Does the Toshiba SDM-1402 come with the necessary software?

Anything else I should know? *wink*
(any useful DVD Rom link sites appreciated)

Thank guys! You are the greatest!

LaVie 🙂
