Your Mommy Kills Animals edit: WITH PIC NOW (peta)

Not many events these days move me to consider writing about, at least for a Geek site. I don't see much reason to involve GE in a topic that doesn't effect something we consider "Geeky." However, today I found something that moved me. Not too surprisingly, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is involved.

I've always viewed PETA as a kind of a joke. These people are the people who go sit in duck blinds and skybust (shoot when they have no chance of hitting) so that hunters like myself can't enjoy the sport (and the eventual meal that comes from) of duck hunting. These are the people who tell you not to eat meat, or even drink milk, because it is cruel to animals. They are not content in their beliefs, they must constantly try to convert others, and not always in a "passive" way. These are also the people who have a track record of very aggressively trying to force their beliefs upon others. They get pretty women to pose nude (not that there is anything wrong with posing nude in and of itself) just so that horny men will look at PETA. The campaigns may generate interest, but I doubt they generate much in the way of converts. Now PETA has sunk to an incredible new low.

Pointed to PETA from another link on the net, I saw a horrible cartoon image of a psychotic-looking apron-wearing woman, wearing an apron and stabbing a rabbit. The rabbit has a look of fear on its face, and blood is flying everywhere. Now this normally would say to me, "Typical PETA Bullshit." However, it is not this horribly graphic image that disturbed me. It is the slogan, "YOUR MOMMY KILLS ANIMALS" next to this image that bothers me so much. Much like the allegations that the tobacco industry targets youth inappropriately, I allege that PETA is inappropriately targeting children. I am a firm believer that violent video games do not in and of themselves produce killers. I am a firm believer that a child of a certain age has the ability to view fantasy violence and understand that what they see is not real, but who is PETA targeting here. Let's look at that slogan again.

YOUR MOMMY KILLS ANIMALS

YOUR MOMMY. MOMMY. Not mom, not mother. MOMMY. Do you call your mother MOMMY? Children who have just learned to read call their mothers mommy. The slogan is aimed at YOUNG children. The image accompanying it is graphic, and the only mother it resembles in any way if you ask me is Norman Bates' mom. Well, one might think "It's on the website, kids won't see it." Not so. First off, think back to when you were younger -- you probably got into a lot more places than your parents realized -- but wait! PETA has reporoduced this image as a leaflet, designed to look like a COMIC BOOK cover, which adds "How many animals has she killed? The sooner she stops wearing fur, the sooner animals will be safe."

In PETA's eyes, Animals will never be safe until we all stop eating them and let them roam free, overpopulating the planet and spreading mayhem and disease. Now one may argue that these impressionable kids can quickly desseminate from the psycho mom on the cover of this "leaflet" and their real mom, and they may be right. At least, I hope they're right. I'm not saying everyone has to be a fur-loving meat-eater either.

Your choices (and that of your children) are yours (and theirs) to make. Consider if you will, the reliance we've had on animals in the past. Where would we be without horses to pull us, cattle to feed us, and numerous other animals to feed and clothe us? Would the human species survive if all the cavemen had suddenly decided to not eat meat, and not use furs to keep warm? According to some accounts, we may never have even evolved into the intelligent species we are today if it hadn't been for the consumption of meats, which in turn increased our brain size!

I'm not saying everyone has to love fur and eat meat. I'm not claiming knowledge of the devine. I'm also not distributing flyers that target our children with phrases like YOUR MOMMY KILLS ANIMALS. The bottom line is that PETA must be held accountable for their actions. There is no telling how damaging this flyer could be the the fragile psyche of a child. Let children make up their own minds, with a little parental guidance. PETA, there is nothing wrong with stating your beliefs, but there is something wrong with encroaching on the beliefs of others. Come on, PETA, wake up.

These asshats are going to be at the Denver Theater passing out those pamphlets to children going to see The Nutcracker today.

There are several groups and radio stations organizing a counter protest. I do not think they will be prepared for the angry people waiting for them.

Check it out.

call PCU... that sounds like a job for the meat tossers!!!!

These tactics are wrong IMO, and remind me of the way zealot anti-abortion protesters use graphic pictures for shock effect. Sick and wrong to use children in a mostly political propaganda war....

Does anyone remember the story that was on Fark a while ago about a professor who gutted a deer infront of his class to show them how to use all the parts of the animals? I really loved the ending when he had a bbq and had a little speach written out about the life cycle of the deer he killed, etc.

I knew I should have put that in my favorites..

EDIT: Found it!

Azazyel. excellent story.

Yeah, it was pretty inspiring. Here is the ending for the lazy..

"This animal, like its ancestors and progeny, was produced locally. The meat herein was produced as a result of free genetic exchange (no artificial insemination). The animal was not castrated, or forced onto a synchronized breeding schedule. She lived to maturity (4 1/2 years) and reproduced at least once, but most likely had three sets of twins. The meat contains no antibiotics, synthetic steroids, artificial growth hormones or insecticide residues. Its production required no landclearing, fencing, fertilizing or feedlots. Her life did not contribute to the destruction of associated fauna and flora. No manure was collected or spread on erosion-prone pastures to produce (or as a result of) its growth. This animal was not confined, transported or kept in crowded conditions at any point in its life. The lean, unmarbled meat was not wrapped in plastic and Styrofoam packaging. No nitrates or sulfites were applied to prevent discolouration. No fossil fuels were used for specialized refrigerator transport or cold-storage ageing. Associated inedible parts were not reconstituted into cattle meal or dog food. Inedible parts were fed to indigenous fauna (most likely coyotes, magpies and ravens). Her bones provided calcium to the aspen grove where she was feeding. Substantial calories were metabolized by the hunter over several days to secure this meat. She died quickly, and honourably. Before, as well as after, her death she was treated with reverence and respect. Allowing my participation in a natural cycle was this animal's gift to me. The energy that flowed from sun to plant to deer now also flows through me. This meal does offer reflection, natural continuity, appreciation, health, hope, and tangible renewal of life. Let us prey."
