"Your momma wears combat boots." Why was that offensive back then?

I remember in Napoleon Dynamite that girl was told her mom wears combat boots and she ran off crying. Back in elementary school it was a popular insult among the kids too.

Is it insulting just by the fact that you're talking about someone's mother or is there some other underlying meaning, such as she's a tomboy cause she wears them?

Just a guess but maybe after WWII there was a surplus of army boots and were really cheap? Kind of like government cheese but boots?

it comes from the japanese insult "o-ma-e no kah-chan wa de-be-soh" meaning "your mother has a protruding navel"

the natural association between boots and navels, of course

The joke in Napoleon Dynamite was "Your mom goes to college".

Way back when women were actually feminine and dressed as such. There was not unisex boring clothing as there is today. Back then a woman clothed was as sexy as she was naked.....made the days nice while waiting for the evenings.

Close. Army boots were indestructable. My father had a pair of them which he wore on the farm - they were still going strong when he died in the late 1970's. Ratty, but still intact.

It was bad enough that your daddy wore combat boots/arms boots. But when your mother did it, it meant your family was the lowest of the low.
