When AuthenTec came out with their final product, the company generated interest from a number of customers, including Apple, Motorola and Fujitsu. Apple, in particular, "ate it up," Moody said, and eventually bought the entire company in 2012 for $356 million.
Are there any other companies with the same technology? Most of the ones I've seen so far are swipe, and those swipe ones almost universally suck.
P.S. I think this almost guarantees TouchID is going to be in the iPad this year, and maybe even the new iPad mini. And if not the mini this year, then next year. Apple now owns this killer tech, and they're going to make the most of it. There will be lower end older models for cheaper, without TouchID, but I suspect all of the mainstream new models will have it.
